How to Build a Gunpowder Farm in Minecraft
Complete guide to building a gunpowder farm (creeper farm) in Minecraft 1.21+ Java Edition. Covers cat-based spawning filters, trapdoor ceilings, and TNT/firework supply rates.
Gunpowder is used for TNT, firework rockets (elytra flight fuel), fire charges, and splash/lingering potions. The only renewable source is killing creepers, witches, or ghasts. Creeper farms are the most practical option because creepers spawn frequently and can be filtered from other mobs using cats. This guide covers a dedicated gunpowder farm design.
Why build a gunpowder farm?
- Firework rockets require gunpowder and are consumed constantly when flying with an elytra.
- TNT is used for mining, raiding ancient cities, and building cannons.
- Splash potions and lingering potions require gunpowder to craft.
- A dedicated creeper farm produces 500 to 2,000+ gunpowder per hour.

How to make a creeper-only spawning platform
The trick to a creeper-only farm is ceiling height. Creepers are 1.7 blocks tall. Spiders are 0.9 blocks tall but 2 blocks wide. Skeletons, zombies, and endermen are 2+ blocks tall. By using a 2-block-tall ceiling with trapdoors (which count as full blocks for spawn space calculations but are only half a block thick), you create a space where:
- Creepers spawn (1.7 blocks tall, fits in 2 blocks)
- Spiders spawn (0.9 tall, fits in 2 blocks) but are scared away by cats
- Skeletons and zombies are blocked (2 blocks tall, trapdoors reduce headroom below 2 blocks)
- Endermen are blocked (3 blocks tall)
Wait, spiders still spawn. The solution: trapdoor ceilings create an effective gap of 1.9 blocks, which blocks mobs that need exactly 2 blocks. Creepers at 1.7 blocks fit. Skeletons and zombies at 1.99 blocks are blocked. Spiders are 0.9 blocks tall and will still spawn, but cats scare them into the drop shafts. In practice, the farm becomes nearly 100% creepers.
Step-by-step build instructions
Step 1: Build the spawning platform
Build a large platform (at least 16x16) at Y=200 or higher (above the world surface so no other mobs spawn nearby). Make the platform dark (solid roof above). Place trapdoors (open position) on the ceiling, creating a 1.9-block headroom.
Side view (one spawning layer):
[SOLID BLOCK ROOF]
[OPEN TRAPDOORS on ceiling] <-- reduces headroom to ~1.9 blocks
. <-- 1.9 blocks of air
[SPAWNING FLOOR]
Step 2: Add cats to scare creepers
Place tamed cats at strategic positions on the platform. Creepers flee from cats within 6 blocks. Position cats in the center of the platform so creepers run toward the edges. At the edges, they fall into water channels or drop shafts. Cats must be seated (right-click to sit) or in boats to prevent them from wandering.
Step 3: Build drop shafts at the edges
Cut the platform edges to create drop shafts. Creepers running from cats reach the edge and fall. For killing, use a 24-block drop (kills creepers on impact, they have 20 HP). For a one-hit-kill XP farm, use a 22-block drop.
Step 4: Stack multiple layers
Build 4 to 8 spawning layers stacked vertically, each with its own trapdoor ceiling and cats. All layers feed into the same drop shaft. More layers = more spawning surface = more creepers per minute.
Side view (stacked):
[LAYER 4 - trapdoors + cats]
[LAYER 3 - trapdoors + cats]
[LAYER 2 - trapdoors + cats]
[LAYER 1 - trapdoors + cats]

[DROP SHAFT - 24 blocks]

[HOPPER] > [CHEST]
Step 5: Install collection system
At the bottom of the drop shaft, place hoppers covering the landing area. All gunpowder drops funnel into chests. If using a 22-block drop for XP, stand at the bottom and kill the damaged creepers with a Looting III sword.
Spawn-proofing
The farm only works efficiently if mobs cannot spawn anywhere else within 128 blocks of your AFK position. Build at Y=200+ (above all terrain) and place slabs on any exposed surfaces nearby. On servers, this may require significant spawn-proofing of nearby builds or terrain.
Expected rates
| Design size | Gunpowder per hour | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single layer (16x16) | 200 to 400 | Minimal build |
| 4 layers (16x16 each) | 600 to 1,200 | Standard farm |
| 8 layers (21x21 each) | 1,500 to 3,000 | Large-scale farm |
Common mistakes
- Cats not seated. If cats are standing, they wander and fall off platforms. Right-click to seat them, or place them in boats.
- Trapdoors in closed position. Trapdoors must be in the open position to reduce headroom. Closed trapdoors sit flat and do not block taller mobs.
- Building too low. If the farm is near ground level, mobs spawn on the surface and fill the mob cap. Build high in the sky.
- Insufficient lighting around the farm. While the spawning layers must be dark inside, the area outside the farm (above, around) should be lit or slabbed to prevent unwanted spawns.
- Creepers exploding near cats. Creepers run from cats but do not despawn. If they get stuck in a corner with a cat, they do not explode (creepers only explode near players). But they do clog the mob cap. Ensure all edges have drop-offs.
Frequently asked questions
Do charged creepers spawn in this farm?
Charged creepers only form when lightning strikes within 4 blocks of a regular creeper. This is extremely rare in a controlled farm environment. You can force it with a Channeling trident during thunderstorms.
How many firework rockets can I make per hour?
Each firework rocket needs 1 gunpowder + 1 paper. A 4-layer farm producing 800 gunpowder per hour gives you 800 firework rockets per hour, enough for extensive elytra travel.
Can I use this farm for music discs?
Yes, with modification. Music discs drop when a skeleton kills a creeper. You can build a mechanism where skeletons shoot through creepers. This requires precise mob positioning and is complex, but possible.
Why are spiders spawning in my creeper farm?
Spiders are shorter than creepers and fit in the same headroom. Add more cats. Cats scare both creepers and spiders, pushing spiders toward the drop shafts along with creepers. Spider drops (string) are a minor byproduct.
