Lay the path where players actually walk. Mark the line with a single row of blocks first, following gentle curves instead of hard 90-degree turns, then widen it.

Lay the surface
One to two blocks wide for garden paths, three to five for main roads. Mix two or three surfaces (gravel, dirt path, cobblestone, stone) so the run is never flat and dead.

A path reads as a path because of its edges. Drop the surface one block and frame it with grass, stone, logs, slabs or a low fence so it sits in the land.
