How to Build a Leather Farm in Minecraft

Guide to building a leather farm in Minecraft 1.21+ using cow breeders, hoglin farms, and automated killing systems for books, armor, and item frames.

Leather is required for books, bookshelves (and therefore enchanting tables), item frames, leather armor, and bundles. The most common way to farm leather is by breeding and killing cows, though hoglins in the Nether offer an alternative. This guide covers both methods with automatic and semi-automatic designs.

Why build a leather farm?

  • Books require leather, and bookshelves need books for enchanting.
  • Item frames (1 leather + 8 sticks each) are used constantly for storage labeling.
  • Leather armor can be dyed any color for custom outfits.
  • Bundles (added in 1.21) use leather in their recipe.

Step-by-step: Automatic cow farm

Step 1: Build the breeding pen

Create a 5x5 pen with 2-block-high walls. This holds the adult cows used for breeding. Place a gate for access. You need at least 2 cows to start, but 8 to 10 adults produce calves faster.

Step 2: Create the calf separation channel

Build a 1-block-wide water channel along one wall of the breeding pen. Place signs along the pen wall at calf height. Baby cows are small enough to pass through openings that adult cows cannot. Use a fence gate or trapdoor gap (baby cows are 0.45 blocks wide) to separate calves from adults.

Step 3: Build the kill chamber

The water channel pushes calves into a collection area. Once they grow into adults (20 minutes), they touch lava suspended above by signs. The lava kills them, and the drops (leather and raw beef) fall into hoppers below.

Step 4: Feed the adults

Hold wheat and right-click pairs of adult cows. Each breeding produces one calf. There is a 5-minute cooldown between breedings per cow. With 10 adults, you can breed 5 calves every 5 minutes. This is a semi-automatic design: the breeding requires manual wheat feeding, but the killing and collection are automatic.

Fully automatic variant: Hoglin farm (Nether)

Hoglins drop leather and raw porkchop on death. They flee from warped fungus, which makes them easy to herd into kill zones. Unlike cows, hoglins spawn naturally in crimson forests, so no breeding is needed.

Step 1: Find a crimson forest biome

Hoglins spawn exclusively in crimson forest biomes in the Nether. Travel through the Nether until you find one. They spawn on nylium blocks at light level 11 or lower.

Step 2: Build a spawning platform

Create a flat area of crimson nylium (at least 16x16). Remove all blocks above it for 4 blocks of vertical clearance. This is the spawning zone.

Step 3: Use warped fungus to herd

Hoglins are scared of warped fungus, nether portals, and respawn anchors. Place warped fungus strategically to push hoglins toward a drop shaft. They walk away from the fungus, falling into the pit.

Step 4: Kill with fall damage or entity cramming

A 25-block drop kills hoglins from fall damage. Place hoppers at the bottom to collect leather and porkchops. Alternatively, use a 1x1 entity cramming chamber (24+ entities in one block causes death).

Drop rates

SourceLeather per killOther drops
Cow0 to 2Raw beef (1 to 3)
Hoglin0 to 1Raw porkchop (2 to 4)
Horse / Donkey0 to 2Nothing useful
Rabbit (rabbit hide x4)Equivalent 1Raw rabbit, rabbit foot

Looting III increases all leather drops. With Looting III, cows drop 0 to 5 leather per kill.

Common mistakes

  • Overfilling the breeding pen. Too many cows cause entity lag and can push each other through walls. Keep the breeding pen to 10 to 20 adults maximum.
  • Calves not separating properly. If the gap is too large, adults escape. If too small, calves get stuck. Test the gap size with one calf before building the full system.
  • Lava too close to breeding pen. Lava placed incorrectly can kill breeding adults. Always suspend lava using signs in the kill chamber only, well away from the adult pen.
  • Forgetting Looting III for manual kills. If you kill cows by hand, always use a Looting III sword to maximize leather drops.
  • Hoglin farm near a warped biome. If a warped forest is adjacent, hoglins avoid the area entirely. Build the farm deep inside the crimson forest.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest leather farm?

Hoglin farms produce the most leather per hour because hoglins spawn naturally and do not require breeding. A well-built hoglin farm produces 200+ leather per hour. Cow breeders are slower but easier to build in the Overworld.

Can I get leather from fishing?

Yes, leather is a junk item from fishing. However, the drop rate is extremely low and not a practical farming method. Dedicated cow or hoglin farms are far more efficient.

How much leather do I need for a full enchanting setup?

A full enchanting setup requires 15 bookshelves. Each bookshelf needs 3 books, and each book needs 1 leather. That is 45 leather total. A small cow breeder produces this in under an hour.

Do hoglins drop cooked porkchop if killed by fire?

Yes. If a hoglin dies from fire or lava damage, it drops cooked porkchop instead of raw. This makes lava-kill hoglin farms a dual-purpose food and leather source.
