WATER DRAINS OUT · MUD DRIES
water bottle turns dirt to mud dripstone dries mud to clay
A water bottle on dirt makes mud. Set the mud over a pointed dripstone and the water drains out, drying it into clay. Mine the clay for four clay balls, then repeat for renewable clay.

What you need

A water bottle
Dirt to turn into mud
Pointed dripstone, tip down
The clay you harvest

Water makes mud, dripstone makes clay

A water bottle on dirt turns it to mud. Put that mud directly over a pointed dripstone pointing down, and the dripstone drains the water out so the mud dries into a clay block. Mine it for clay balls, smelt them into bricks, and repeat for renewable clay from just dirt and water.

Quick answers

What is a mud and clay farm in Minecraft?
It is a setup that makes renewable clay from ordinary dirt. You turn dirt into mud with a water bottle, then let the mud dry over a pointed dripstone into clay, so you never have to dive in rivers for clay again.
How do you make mud?
Use a water bottle on a dirt block, including coarse and rooted dirt, and it becomes a mud block. Mud also occurs naturally in mangrove swamps, but the water bottle method lets you make it anywhere.
How does mud turn into clay?
Place a mud block directly above a pointed dripstone that is pointing down, with space below for the drip. The dripstone slowly drains the water out of the mud, and after a while the mud dries out and becomes a clay block.
What do you do with the clay?
Mine the clay block for four clay balls. Smelt a clay ball into a brick for building, or smelt a whole clay block into terracotta. That makes bricks and terracotta fully renewable from dirt and water.
What else is mud used for?
Combine mud with wheat to get packed mud, which crafts into mud bricks for a distinct building set. Mud is also used to grow mangrove trees and as a decorative block in swamp builds.
Does this work the same on Bedrock?
Yes. Making mud with a water bottle and drying it into clay over a pointed dripstone both work on Java and Bedrock, so the same renewable clay farm works on either edition.
