Best PvP Gear in Minecraft: Armor, Weapons, and Enchantments
Complete gear guide for Minecraft PvP. Covers the best armor sets, weapons, enchantment combinations, and loadout strategies for competitive combat.
Gear is the foundation of every PvP fight. Two equally skilled players will have the fight decided by whoever has the better equipment. Knowing which gear to prioritize, which enchantments to stack, and how to assemble a complete PvP loadout separates prepared players from easy targets. This guide covers everything from material tiers to optimal enchantment combinations for every piece of equipment.
Armor tiers for PvP
Armor in Minecraft provides damage reduction calculated from armor points and armor toughness. Higher-tier armor both reduces more damage and has better toughness, which means it stays effective against strong attacks.
| Armor Tier | Total Armor Points | Toughness | PvP Viability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leather | 7 | 0 | Last resort only. Better than nothing but barely |
| Gold | 11 | 0 | Poor durability, but higher enchantability. Niche use in enchant-focused builds |
| Chainmail | 12 | 0 | Slightly better than gold. Rare to obtain. Not worth seeking out |
| Iron | 15 | 0 | Solid budget option. Good enough for casual PvP |
| Diamond | 20 | 8 | Standard competitive tier. Excellent protection and toughness |
| Netherite | 20 | 12 | Best in the game. Higher toughness, knockback resistance, fire-resistant item |
Netherite armor has the same armor points as diamond but higher toughness (12 vs 8). That toughness difference reduces damage from heavy hits more effectively. Netherite also adds innate knockback resistance, which is a significant PvP advantage because you get pushed around less. The items also survive lava and fire when dropped.
Weapon comparison
Swords
Swords are the primary PvP weapon. They swing fastest among melee weapons (0.625 seconds per swing in 1.9+), deal consistent damage, and have a sweep attack that hits multiple targets.
| Sword | Base Damage | DPS (full cooldown) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wooden | 4 | 6.4 | Placeholder. Replace immediately |
| Stone | 5 | 8.0 | Easy to craft. Decent early game |
| Iron | 6 | 9.6 | Reliable. Minimum for serious PvP |
| Diamond | 7 | 11.2 | Standard competitive tier |
| Netherite | 8 | 12.8 | Best. One extra damage per hit adds up fast |
Axes
Axes deal more damage per hit but swing slower. A diamond axe deals 9 damage vs a diamond sword's 7, but the axe takes 1 second to recharge vs the sword's 0.625 seconds. In sustained fights, swords win on DPS. Axes are best used for opening hits, shield-breaking, and hit-and-run tactics. Always carry an axe alongside your sword for shield counters.
Tridents
Tridents deal 9 melee damage and can be thrown for 8 ranged damage. With Loyalty, they return after throwing. With Riptide, they launch you through rain or water. Tridents are situationally powerful in aquatic PvP or rain fights but less versatile than a sword+bow combination on dry land.
Maces (1.21+)
The Mace deals increased damage based on fall distance before impact. Paired with Wind Charges or Riptide tridents for height, a Mace can deal massive single hits. In competitive PvP it is niche but devastating when it connects. The risk is that you need to fall toward your opponent, making you predictable.
Optimal enchantment loadout
Armor enchantments
| Piece | Essential Enchantments | Optional |
|---|---|---|
| Helmet | Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending | Aqua Affinity, Respiration III (situational) |
| Chestplate | Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending | Thorns III (debatable, see below) |
| Leggings | Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending | Swift Sneak III (utility, not combat) |
| Boots | Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending, Feather Falling IV | Depth Strider III or Frost Walker II |
Protection IV on every piece is standard. Some players run one piece with Blast Protection IV (for TNT/creeper fights) or Projectile Protection IV (for bow-heavy engagements), but Protection IV is the most versatile because it reduces all damage types.
Thorns III debate: Thorns reflects damage back to attackers but drains your armor durability faster. On servers with Mending and easy XP farms, durability is not a concern, so Thorns is a free damage boost. On hardcore or resource-scarce servers, the durability cost may not be worth it. Decide based on your server's economy.
Weapon enchantments
| Weapon | Essential Enchantments | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sword | Sharpness V, Unbreaking III, Mending, Fire Aspect II, Sweeping Edge III | Knockback II is optional. It pushes enemies away, which can be bad if you want to combo them |
| Axe | Sharpness V, Unbreaking III, Mending | Efficiency V helps for chopping shields. No Sweeping Edge on axes |
| Bow | Power V, Unbreaking III, Infinity | Flame is nice for extra damage. Punch II adds knockback for keeping distance |
| Crossbow | Quick Charge III, Unbreaking III, Piercing IV | Multishot for group fights. Piercing for 1v1 |
Sharpness vs. Smite vs. Bane of Arthropods
Always use Sharpness for PvP. Smite only works against undead mobs. Bane of Arthropods only works against spiders and silverfish. Neither affects players. Sharpness adds damage to everything, including other players. Sharpness V adds 3 extra damage per hit to any target.
The complete PvP loadout
A fully prepared PvP kit looks like this:
Armor:
Helmet: Netherite, Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending
Chestplate: Netherite, Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending
Leggings: Netherite, Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending
Boots: Netherite, Protection IV, Feather Falling IV, Unbreaking III, Mending
Hotbar:
1: Netherite Sword (Sharpness V, Fire Aspect II, Unbreaking III, Mending)
2: Netherite Axe (Sharpness V, Efficiency V, Unbreaking III, Mending)
3: Bow (Power V, Infinity, Flame, Unbreaking III)
4: Golden Apples (stack of 16+)
5: Blocks (64 cobblestone or end stone)
6: Ender Pearls (stack of 16)
7: Potions (Strength II + Speed II)
8: Water Bucket
9: Cobwebs or Lava Bucket (trap tools)
Offhand: Shield (Unbreaking III, Mending) or Totem of Undying
Budget vs. premium loadouts
Not every server gives you time to build a full netherite loadout. Here are tier-appropriate kits:
Budget kit (first day on server)
Full iron armor (no enchants), iron sword, shield, bow with 64 arrows, stack of steak. This costs almost nothing and lets you defend yourself against most attackers. You will lose to enchanted diamond players, but you will not be helpless.
Mid-tier kit (established player)
Full diamond armor with Protection IV, diamond sword with Sharpness V, bow with Power V and Infinity. Golden apples. Ender pearls. This kit wins most fights on survival servers. The jump from iron to enchanted diamond is the biggest power increase in the game.
End-game kit (server veteran)
Full netherite with max enchants, potions, totems, elytra for mobility, ender pearls, golden apples. At this tier, fights between equally geared players come down purely to skill and potion management.
Frequently asked questions
Is netherite worth the upgrade from diamond?
Yes, but it is not as dramatic as iron to diamond. The higher toughness reduces incoming damage slightly, the knockback resistance is valuable in combos, and the items surviving fire/lava is great insurance. If you can afford it, always upgrade.
Should I use Knockback on my sword?
It depends on your playstyle. Knockback pushes opponents away after each hit, which interrupts combos and gives them time to eat or pearl away. For combo-focused PvP, leave it off. For hit-and-run or survival PvP where you want distance, put it on. On Bedwars and Skywars, Knockback is excellent for knocking players into the void.
Is Mending or Infinity better on a bow?
For PvP, Infinity. Carrying arrows wastes inventory space that you need for other PvP items (potions, blocks, food). With Infinity, one arrow in your inventory is all you need. Use Mending on weapons and armor that see constant use.
Does armor trim affect PvP stats?
No. Armor trims are purely cosmetic. They do not change protection, toughness, or any stat. Choose trims based on looks, not performance.
Every armour set, with the two columns nobody quotes
Armour points are the figure everyone knows. Toughness and knockback resistance are the ones that decide fights. Toughness reduces how much a heavy hit cuts through your armour, and netherite is the only set in the game with knockback resistance built in at all, which is why it feels like it holds ground that diamond does not.
| Set | Helmet | Chestplate | Leggings | Boots | Full set | Toughness | Knockback resistance | Enchantability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netherite | 3 | 8 | 6 | 3 | 20 | 3 | 0.1 | 15 |
| Diamond | 3 | 8 | 6 | 3 | 20 | 2 | 0 | 10 |
| Armadillo Scute | 3 | 8 | 6 | 3 | 20 | 0 | 0 | 10 |
| Iron | 2 | 6 | 5 | 2 | 15 | 0 | 0 | 9 |
| Turtle Scute | 2 | 6 | 5 | 2 | 15 | 0 | 0 | 9 |
| Chainmail | 2 | 5 | 4 | 1 | 12 | 0 | 0 | 12 |
| Gold | 2 | 5 | 3 | 1 | 11 | 0 | 0 | 25 |
| Copper | 2 | 4 | 3 | 1 | 10 | 0 | 0 | 8 |
| Leather | 1 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 7 | 0 | 0 | 15 |
Frequently asked questions
Is netherite armour really better than diamond?
The armour points are identical at twenty for a full set. What netherite adds is a toughness of 3 against diamond's 2, and 0.1 of knockback resistance per piece, which diamond has none of. Against a heavy hit and against being pushed around, that is the whole difference.
Which set has the best enchantability?
Leather and netherite share the highest figure at 15, ahead of iron at 9 and diamond at 10. Enchantability decides how good the results at a table are, so a leather set genuinely does enchant better than a diamond one, which is the single strangest number in the table.
