What do you need for a working beacon at the top?
A beacon needs a pyramid base of iron, gold, emerald, diamond or netherite blocks directly under it. One layer of 9 blocks (3x3) gives a short beam, and four layers (164 blocks total) give the tallest beam and the most effects. The beacon also needs clear sky above it, so do not roof over the lantern room with solid blocks.
How tall should a Minecraft lighthouse be?
20 to 35 blocks reads well from the water without dwarfing nearby builds. The beacon beam always renders from the beacon block to the top of the sky no matter the tower height, so build for looks. The beam itself is visible from up to 256 blocks away on Java and 64 on Bedrock. Build height limit is Y 320 on 1.21, so there is plenty of room.
How do you make the spiral stripes line up on a round tower?
Build one full circle layer at a time and only change colour on whole layers, not mid-row. A common stripe is 4 to 6 layers per band. Plan the layer count before you start so the top band ends clean instead of a half stripe under the lantern room.
Do sea lanterns and glowstone need anything to glow?
No. Sea lanterns and glowstone emit light level 15 on their own with no redstone or power. Sea lanterns are crafted from 4 prismarine shards and 5 prismarine crystals, both dropped by guardians and elder guardians in ocean monuments.
Build tips and common mistakes
- Start the footprint as an odd diameter, 7 or 9 blocks, so the circle has one centre column. That single column makes the taper and the spiral stairs easy to align.
- Light the inside as you climb. Place torches or lanterns every few layers so mobs cannot spawn in the dark shaft. A tower lit only at the top still spawns mobs lower down.
- The beacon beam is blocked by any opaque block above it, but transparent blocks let it pass. Glass, stained glass, glass panes, slabs and stairs all let the beam through, so a glass lantern room works fine. The one catch is tinted glass, which blocks the beam despite looking see-through.
- Sea lanterns waterlog, so a lighthouse standing in the ocean keeps glowing even with water around the base. Glowstone does not waterlog and will pop water out of its block.
- Concrete needs concrete powder placed next to water to set. Carry a water bucket, or keep a small pool near the build, instead of hauling finished concrete block by block.
- Use red and white concrete, not wool, for the stripes near the lantern. Wool burns, and an exposed coastal tower near lightning can catch fire on the cloth.
