How to Build a Watchtower
A tall, slim lookout: a stone shaft, a lit platform up top and a signal fire. It marks territory, lights the night and makes a great first outpost build.
- Tall and thin. A watchtower is height, not width. A small footprint and a long climb is the whole look.
- Top-heavy lookout. The platform overhangs the shaft, with crenellations and a light to watch from.
- A signal up top. A fire, beacon or lantern on top makes it read as a watchtower, not just a tower.

Build it in five

Lay a small base
Start with a solid stone or cobble footing, three to five blocks across. A watchtower is tall, so the base must feel planted and heavy.

Raise the shaft
Build straight up, ten to twenty blocks, with a few arrow-slit windows and a torch every few blocks inside to light the climb.

Overhang the top
Widen the top into a platform that juts out past the shaft on corbels or stairs. That overhang is the classic watchtower shape.

Crenellate and rail it
Ring the platform with merlons or a fence so you can stand and watch safely, and add a trapdoor up from the shaft.

Light the signal
Top it with a brazier fire, a beacon, lanterns or a banner. The light is the point: it warns, marks home and looks great at night.
Height first, light second
Two things make a watchtower: it is taller than everything around it, and it carries a light at the top. Get the proportion right (thin shaft, overhanging top) and add a fire or beacon, and even a plain stone tube reads instantly as a lookout.
