Height is the whole atmosphere

A one storey library is a study. Two or three storeys with a gallery around the upper level, and shelving that runs to the ceiling, is what makes a room read as a library, and ladders or stairs to the gallery are part of the look.

Break the shelf wall

An unbroken run of bookshelves flattens out. Dropping a window, a fireplace, a chiseled bookshelf section or a gap with a painting into the run gives the eye somewhere to rest and makes the shelves look deeper.

Light from above, not from the shelves

Chandeliers, lanterns on chains and a light well down the middle keep the floor lit without torches stuck between the books. Glowstone hidden behind the top shelf row is the trick for lighting the shelves themselves.
