How to Find a Stronghold in Minecraft

Complete guide to locating the stronghold using Eyes of Ender, triangulation math, and portal room tips for reaching the End.

The stronghold is the underground structure that houses the End portal, your gateway to the Ender Dragon fight. Finding it reliably requires blaze powder, ender pearls and a bit of directional reasoning. This guide covers every step from gathering materials to standing in front of the portal frame.

Gathering Eyes of Ender

Each Eye of Ender is crafted from one blaze powder and one ender pearl. You need up to 12 eyes to fill an empty portal frame, plus several extras for locating the stronghold. Bring at least 15 to be safe.

  • Blaze powder comes from blaze rods, dropped by blazes in Nether fortresses. Each rod gives two powder.
  • Ender pearls drop from endermen. The fastest farm spot is a warped forest biome in the Nether, where endermen spawn densely. Trading with cleric villagers also works at the master level.

Throwing your first eye

Stand in the Overworld and right-click an Eye of Ender. It floats upward, drifts toward the nearest stronghold for about two seconds, then either drops as an item or shatters (roughly 20% chance to break). Watch the horizontal direction it travels, that is the line from your position toward the stronghold.

Note your coordinates (F3 on Java, coordinate display in Bedrock settings) and the compass bearing the eye followed. You now have one directional ray.

Triangulation, finding the exact spot

One throw gives you a direction, not a distance. Walk 300 to 500 blocks perpendicular to the first ray, then throw again. The second ray points in a slightly different angle. The stronghold sits where the two rays intersect.

If you prefer mental math: note the X and Z at both throw positions and the angles. Even a rough intersection narrows the target to a small area. Most players simply walk along the first ray for a few hundred blocks, throw again, and keep following until the eye dives downward instead of floating forward. When the eye drops straight down, you are standing directly above the stronghold.

Digging down to the stronghold

Strongholds generate between y = -10 and y = 40 in most world types. Dig a staircase or use a vertical shaft with water at the bottom. Listen for silverfish and watch for mossy stone brick, both signal you have reached the structure.

Strongholds are mazes of corridors, libraries, storerooms and dead ends. The portal room can be anywhere in the layout. Systematic exploration works best: place torches on one side of every wall so you can retrace your path. If you hit a dead end, break through walls, the portal room might sit behind one.

Stronghold generation rules

  • Java Edition generates 128 strongholds per world, arranged in concentric rings. The first ring (three strongholds) sits between 1408 and 2688 blocks from spawn. Most survival players find one in this ring.
  • Bedrock Edition generates an unlimited number of strongholds with no ring pattern. They cluster loosely in villages and can appear closer to or farther from spawn than Java's first ring.
  • Every stronghold has exactly one portal room. Rarely, world generation bugs can clip the portal room away, if you explore the entire structure and find nothing, locate the next stronghold.

Filling the End portal

The portal frame has 12 slots. Some may already contain Eyes of Ender on generation (each slot has a 10% chance). Place eyes in the empty frames. Stand inside the ring facing outward while placing them, if placed from outside, the eyes face the wrong way and the portal will not activate. Once all 12 slots are filled, the starfield appears and you can jump in.

Preparation checklist

  • Full diamond or netherite armor with Protection IV.
  • A bow with Power V and at least two stacks of arrows (or Infinity).
  • Slow Falling potions to survive knockback off the obsidian pillars.
  • A pumpkin head (optional) to avoid aggro from endermen on the platform.
  • Beds for setting a spawn point near the portal entrance before jumping in.
