How to Lock Villager Trades in Minecraft

Learn how to permanently lock a villager's trades so they never change. Covers the locking mechanic, common mistakes that cause trade loss, and best practices for a permanent trading setup.

Locking a villager's trades is essential for any permanent trading setup. Once locked, a villager keeps its trades forever, no matter what happens to its workstation. This guide explains exactly how locking works, when to lock, and the mistakes that cost players their best villagers.

How trade locking works

A villager's trades become permanently locked the moment you complete any trade with it. "Complete a trade" means you take an item from the trade output slot. Even trading a single item, one paper for one emerald, is enough to lock the entire villager. After locking:

  • The villager's profession cannot be changed by breaking its workstation.
  • All current trades are permanent, including future tiers that unlock as it levels up.
  • The villager can still level up by gaining experience from trades, unlocking higher-tier offers.
  • Breaking the workstation does NOT remove the profession or trades.

This is different from an unlocked (never-traded-with) villager, which loses its profession entirely when its workstation is broken.

When to lock trades

The right time to lock depends on what you are building:

For librarians (enchanted books)

Lock as soon as the Novice-tier book is the one you want. The higher-tier books are random and you cannot control them, so the Novice book is what matters most. Check the trade, and if it is the book you need, trade one paper immediately to lock it in. See the Mending books guide for the cycling strategy.

For other professions

Some professions have important trades at higher tiers. For example, armorers sell diamond armor at Expert and Master levels. In these cases, you might want to level the villager up first to see what higher-tier trades it offers before fully committing. However, you must complete Novice trades to level the villager up, which means the Novice trades get locked first regardless.

For cured villagers

If you plan to cure a villager for discounts, do the curing before or after locking; the order does not matter. Cured discounts apply to locked trades. See the curing guide for details.

What locking does NOT do

  • Locking does not prevent price changes from supply and demand. Prices still fluctuate based on how much you trade.
  • Locking does not prevent the villager from being killed. Protect your villagers.
  • Locking does not prevent zombie conversion. If a zombie kills a locked villager on Normal difficulty, there is a 50% chance it dies permanently (Hard gives 100% conversion to zombie villager).

Protecting locked villagers

Once you have locked a villager with good trades, protect it:

  • Name it with a name tag so it never despawns (though villagers normally do not despawn, name tags add safety).
  • Place it in a well-lit, enclosed space where mobs cannot reach it.
  • Use a trading hall design that keeps each villager in an individual cell.
  • On multiplayer, protect the area with claims or region protection so other players cannot kill your villagers.
  • Keep the server on Hard difficulty if you ever need to re-cure the villager, so zombie conversion is guaranteed.

What happens if a locked villager's workstation is broken?

The villager keeps its profession and trades, but it will not be able to restock. A locked villager still needs access to its workstation to restock trades (up to twice per day). If the workstation is gone, the villager's trades eventually run out of stock and you cannot buy anything. Place a new workstation of the same type nearby and the villager will claim it and start restocking again.

Relinking a villager to a new workstation

If you need to move a locked villager's workstation, break the old one and place a new one of the same type within range. The villager will link to the new workstation and resume restocking. You do not need to place the exact same block; any unclaimed workstation of the matching type works.

Common mistakes

  • Accidentally trading. Clicking the output slot, even once, locks the villager. Be careful when checking trades. Only click if you want to commit.
  • Not protecting the villager. Lightning strikes can convert villagers to witches. Zombie attacks on Normal difficulty can kill them outright. Build proper shelter and use lightning rods.
  • Forgetting the workstation. A locked villager without a workstation cannot restock. Always ensure each locked villager has access to its workstation.
  • Multiple villagers claiming the same workstation. Only one villager can link to each workstation. If you see restocking issues, check that another villager has not stolen the station.

Frequently asked questions

Can I unlock a locked villager?

No. There is no way to unlock trades in survival Minecraft. Once you trade with a villager, it is locked permanently. The only option is to get a new villager.

Do locked villagers keep their trades if I move them?

Yes. Moving a villager (by boat, minecart, or through a portal) does not affect its trades. However, it will need a new workstation at the destination for restocking.

What if my locked villager gets struck by lightning?

A lightning strike converts a villager into a witch permanently. The witch cannot be converted back. This is why lightning rods near your trading hall are important. Place lightning rods on top of or around your trading hall to redirect strikes away from villagers.

Can I lock a villager and then cure it for discounts?

Yes. The order does not matter. You can lock first, then cure, or cure first, then lock. Both approaches give you the same result: permanent trades with permanent discounts.
