How to Make a Bed in Minecraft
Three wool, three planks, one crafting table. The bed is the single most useful block on night one: it sets your spawn and skips the dark. Here is the fast version, plus the one mistake that turns a bed into a bomb.
The recipe
Two rules people miss: the 3 wool must be the same colour (planks can be any type, even mixed), and a bed is 3 blocks wide so you need a crafting table, not the 2×2 inventory grid.
Get the wool fast
- Shear a sheep. Shears give 1-3 wool and the sheep keeps living, regrowing its wool after it eats grass. This is the only renewable, no-kill source. See the sheep page for colours and drops.
- No shears? Punch the sheep for 1 wool, or craft wool from 4 string (string drops from spiders and breaking cobwebs).
- Colour matters for looks only. Dye the sheep or the wool first if you want a coloured bed. The function is identical.
Craft and place it
What the bed actually does
Sleeping does three things at once: it sets your spawn point (you respawn at the bed when you die), it skips to dawn and clears any thunderstorm, and it resets the phantom timer, so the flying mobs that hunt you after three sleepless days never show up.
On a multiplayer server, the night only skips once enough players are in bed (the playersSleepingPercentage gamerule, 100% by default).
Do not do this
Right-clicking a bed anywhere except the Overworld detonates it like TNT and sets the area on fire. It is the most common early death. If you want to sleep in the Nether, you cannot, use a respawn anchor instead.
Also: a bed is flammable, and you cannot sleep if a hostile mob is within 8 blocks (“monsters nearby”). Wall the area off first.
Quick answers
Can I sleep during the day?
No. Only at night or during a thunderstorm. The rest of the time the bed just sets your spawn.
Does the bed colour change anything?
No, only the look. A pink bed and a white bed behave identically.
Why won't it let me sleep?
Either it is daytime, a monster is within 8 blocks, or (on a server) not enough players are in bed yet.
Can I move my spawn?
Yes, just sleep in a new bed. Your spawn updates to the most recent one you used.
What do you need to craft a bed?
Three wool of the same colour on the top row and three planks on the middle row of a crafting table. The planks can be any type and can even be mixed, but the three wool must match, and a bed is three blocks wide so the 2x2 inventory grid cannot make one.
What is the fastest way to get wool?
Shear a sheep. Shears give one to three wool and the sheep survives and regrows its wool after eating grass, which makes it the only renewable no-kill source. Without shears you can punch a sheep for one wool, or craft wool from four string dropped by spiders and cobwebs.
Why does a bed explode in the Nether?
Beds only work where the night cycle exists. Using one in the Nether or the End sets off an explosion instead of letting you sleep, which is the single mistake that turns the most useful block on night one into a bomb.
