How to Find Ancient Debris in Minecraft

Best methods for mining Ancient Debris in Minecraft, optimal Y level, bed mining, TNT mining and tips for getting Netherite fast.

Ancient Debris is the raw material you need to craft Netherite, the strongest tier of gear in Minecraft. It spawns exclusively in the Nether, is blast-resistant, and never spawns exposed to air. That means you cannot find it just by walking through caves, you have to mine for it. This guide covers where to look and the three most efficient methods to collect it.

Where Ancient Debris spawns

Ancient Debris generates in the Nether between Y 8 and Y 119, but the sweet spot is Y 15. At that level, the spawn rate peaks with an average of about 1.7 blocks per chunk. A secondary smaller vein can spawn between Y 8 and Y 22. The block is always surrounded by Netherrack or other Nether blocks, it will never be visible on a cave wall or lava lake surface.

Press F3 on Java Edition to check your Y coordinate. On Bedrock, enable the coordinate display in settings.

Method 1: Bed mining (no resources needed)

Beds explode when you try to sleep in the Nether. The explosion is powerful enough to break Netherrack in a large radius but cannot destroy Ancient Debris (it has the same blast resistance as obsidian). This makes beds a cheap and effective mining tool.

How to do it:

  • Bring a stack of wool (or multiple colors) and planks, or pre-craft beds. Each bed costs 3 wool and 3 planks.
  • Dig a 1x2 tunnel at Y 15 in a straight line.
  • Every 4-5 blocks, dig a 1-block pocket in the floor at foot level.
  • Place the bed inside the pocket with the head of the bed away from you.
  • Stand as far back as possible and right-click the bed. The explosion clears a large sphere of Netherrack.
  • Check the exposed area for Ancient Debris (dark brown/gray block with a spiral texture).
  • Repeat along the tunnel.

Important safety tips: wear at least iron armor (preferably with blast protection), bring fire resistance potions to avoid lava deaths, and always place the bed below your feet so the explosion pushes you upward instead of into lava. Keep a block between you and the bed to reduce damage.

Method 2: TNT mining (faster, more expensive)

TNT works like beds but with more control over placement and timing. You need gunpowder (from Creepers or a Creeper farm) and sand.

  • Dig the same 1x2 tunnel at Y 15.
  • Every 4 blocks, place a TNT block in the wall or floor.
  • Place a line of TNT or use a button/lever and redstone to detonate a chain. You can also use flint and steel to ignite one TNT and let the chain reaction do the rest.
  • The blast radius of TNT is smaller than a bed explosion, but you can place TNT precisely and chain many together for a massive clear-out.
  • Scan the crater for Ancient Debris.

TNT mining is faster per hour than bed mining once you have a steady gunpowder supply. A Creeper farm makes this method essentially free.

Method 3: Branch mining (safe but slow)

If you prefer a quiet approach with no explosions and no risk of lava death:

  • Dig a main tunnel at Y 15 in a straight line.
  • Every 2 blocks, dig a branch tunnel 20-30 blocks to the side.
  • Use an Efficiency V diamond or netherite pickaxe with Haste II from a beacon. Netherrack breaks nearly instantly at that level.
  • This method gives you consistent results and is the safest option, but it is significantly slower than explosion methods.

From Ancient Debris to Netherite Ingot

Once you have collected Ancient Debris, the refinement process is:

  • Smelt Ancient Debris in a furnace or blast furnace to get Netherite Scrap. One debris = one scrap.
  • Combine 4 Netherite Scraps + 4 Gold Ingots on a crafting table to make one Netherite Ingot.
  • Use a Smithing Table with a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, a diamond tool/armor piece, and a Netherite Ingot to upgrade the item.

Note that since 1.20, you also need the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, found in Bastion Remnants. You can duplicate the template with 7 diamonds and a block of Netherrack on the smithing table, so find one and copy it before using it.

How much do you need?

A full set of Netherite armor (helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots) requires 4 Netherite Ingots, which means 16 Ancient Debris and 16 gold ingots. Add a sword, pickaxe, axe, shovel and hoe and you need 9 Netherite Ingots total, that is 36 Ancient Debris. Plan your mining session accordingly.

Tips for efficient mining sessions

  • Bring Fire Resistance potions (extended). Lava pockets are everywhere at Y 15 and a single splash of lava can end your run.
  • Carry a few golden apples for emergency healing after explosions.
  • Use a Netherite pickaxe with Efficiency V and Mending if you are branch mining. It tears through Netherrack instantly.
  • An Ender Chest in your inventory lets you safely store debris mid-run. If you die, the ender chest contents are safe.
  • Consider using an Elytra to fly quickly between mining sites instead of walking back through long tunnels.

Netherite gear is the endgame of Minecraft equipment. It does not burn in lava, has higher durability than diamond, and provides knockback resistance on armor. The mining process is tedious, but the results are permanent upgrades to your best tools. Pick your preferred method, stock up on supplies, and start blasting at Y 15.
