How to Make a Jukebox

A jukebox spins your music discs and fills the room with sound. One diamond and eight planks make one. Pick a disc below to hear what plays.

now playing  C418 - cat
Right-click the jukebox with a music disc to play it. Pick a disc above.

The recipe

One diamond, wrapped in eight planks of any wood.

Jukebox

How to play a disc

Place the jukebox, then right-click it with a music disc to start the track. Right-click again with an empty hand to eject the disc. Put a comparator beside it and the signal tells you which disc is playing, so a track can drive redstone.

Where music discs come from

Structure chests

Dungeons, ancient cities, woodland mansions and other loot chests hold music discs.

Skeleton kills creeper

If a skeleton's arrow kills a creeper, the creeper drops a random music disc. The classic farm trick.

Disc 5 from fragments

Find 9 disc fragments in ancient cities and craft them together to make Disc 5.

Quick answers

How do you make a jukebox?

Surround one diamond with eight wooden planks of any kind in the crafting grid.

How do I play a music disc?

Place the jukebox, then right-click it while holding a music disc. Right-click again with an empty hand to eject the disc.

Where do I get music discs?

From dungeon, ancient city, woodland mansion and bastion chests, and by having a skeleton or stray kill a creeper. A few discs only come from specific places, like Pigstep from bastions and Relic from trail ruins.

How do I get Disc 5?

Collect 9 disc fragments from chests in ancient cities and craft them in a 3x3 to make the disc called 5.

Can redstone read what is playing?

Yes. A comparator next to a playing jukebox outputs a signal unique to the disc inside, so you can trigger redstone from a track.

Does the jukebox need power?

No. It plays on its own when you insert a disc; no redstone or fuel needed.

How far does a jukebox play?

You hear it within 64 blocks of the jukebox. Music stops if you walk out of that range and resumes audibly when you walk back in while the track is still running.

Does a music disc get used up?

No. The disc is not consumed. Eject it with an empty hand and you get the same disc back, so one disc plays as many times as you want.

Why does my creeper farm not drop discs?

The creeper must be killed by a skeleton's or stray's arrow, not by you. Player kills, fall damage and other mobs give no disc. Trap the creeper next to a skeleton and let the arrow land the kill.

Which discs cannot drop from creepers?

Pigstep, Otherside, 5 and Relic never drop from creepers. Pigstep and Otherside come from bastion and stronghold chests, 5 is crafted from 9 fragments, and Relic comes from trail ruins suspicious blocks.

Can I break a jukebox without losing the disc?

Breaking a playing jukebox drops both the jukebox and the disc inside as separate items. You do not lose either, but the music stops. Eject first if you only want the disc.

Setup tips and gotchas

Small details that trip people up the first time.

  • Any wood works. Oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry, bamboo planks or crimson and warped planks all craft the same jukebox. You can mix two wood types in the eight outer slots.
  • The diamond is the only real cost. One jukebox needs exactly one diamond and eight planks, so it stays cheap once you have a single diamond.
  • A jukebox burns. It is a wood-family block, so keep it away from lava and fire. Flowing lava one block away can ignite it.
  • Discs stack to one. Each music disc is a single non-stackable item, so a full chest row of discs takes nine slots, not one.
  • The comparator signal differs per disc. 13 outputs the weakest signal at level 1 and 5 the strongest at level 15, with each disc giving its own fixed level, so you can build a redstone display that lights a lamp per track.
  • Hoppers do not auto-load it. A hopper pointing into a jukebox does not insert discs in survival, so you swap discs by hand or by right-click only.
