How to Make a Redstone Trap

A redstone trap fires from a hidden trigger to defend your base. Cross a tripwire and the floor drops away, dispensers fire, or the TNT lights, then it resets.

a hidden tripwire springs it the floor drops away
A tripwire across the path fires the instant someone walks in. Wire it to drop the floor into a pit, fire dispensers, or light TNT. Build traps only to protect your own base.

What you need

Tripwire hooks (the trigger)
String for the wire
Trapdoors for the floor
Redstone to wire the trap

Hidden trigger, sudden output

Every trap is a hidden trigger wired to a sudden output. A tripwire or buried plate the intruder never sees sends one pulse; that pulse opens the trapdoors, fires the dispensers, or lights the TNT. Because the trigger only powers it while tripped, the trapdoors close and pistons pull back on their own, re-arming for the next visitor. Build these to guard your own base, never to grief others.

Quick answers

What is a redstone trap in Minecraft?

It is a hidden mechanism that fires when someone walks into it. A concealed trigger like a tripwire or pressure plate sends a redstone pulse that drops the floor, fires arrows, or sets off TNT, then the trap resets and waits for the next intruder.

How do you make a trapdoor pitfall trap?

Lay a row of trapdoors as the floor of a corridor and wire them so they normally sit closed. Run a tripwire or hidden plate to power them: when someone crosses it the trapdoors flip open and they fall into whatever is below, usually a pit, lava, or a holding cell.

What triggers a trap without being seen?

A tripwire stretched across a doorway is nearly invisible at a glance. A plate hidden under a carpet, or a sculk sensor that hears footsteps, works too. The point is that the victim sets it off themselves before they notice the redstone.

What are the common kinds of redstone trap?

The classics are the trapdoor pitfall, a dispenser wall that fires arrows or fire charges, a piston that shoves the intruder into lava, and the TNT trap. All share the same shape: a hidden trigger driving a sudden, one-shot output.

How do I make a trap that resets itself?

Most do this for free. A tripwire or plate only powers the trap while it is tripped, so trapdoors snap shut and pistons pull back the moment the intruder is gone. For TNT or dispenser traps, refill the dispenser or use an item-loop so the next pulse has ammo.

Are redstone traps allowed on servers?

Only on land you own or have claimed. Traps are fine for defending your own base, but using TNT, lava, or traps to grief other players or their builds breaks the rules on almost every server. Keep them inside your own walls.

Traps that fire once and traps that keep working

A trap that destroys itself is a one shot

TNT under a pressure plate works exactly once and takes the floor with it. If the trap is protecting something, a pit with a piston floor, a dispenser of arrows or a drop into water resets itself and keeps working after the first victim.

Hide the trigger, not the trap

Players look for the trap and walk around it. A tripwire across a corridor, a plate under a carpet or a sculk sensor under the floor all trigger something that is somewhere else, and that separation is what makes a trap land.

Dispensers do more than arrows

A dispenser can place lava, water, fire or a splash potion, and lava followed by water a second later is more effective and more recoverable than TNT. Building the cleanup into the trap is what stops your own base becoming the casualty.
