Base Defense

Defend Your Base From Mobs

A base is only as safe as its darkest corner and its lowest wall. This is the layered defense that holds every night: a wall mobs can't climb, a moat they can't cross, lighting that kills spawns at the source, and a magma ring that finishes anything that gets close. Build it once and stop rebuilding after creepers.

The layered-defense principle

Each layer covers the previous one's gap. The wall stops walkers but not spiders, so the overhang cap handles spiders. The moat stops what reaches the wall, so creepers detonate across the gap instead of against stone. Lighting removes the only thing walls can't stop, interior spawns, by keeping every tile at light 8+. The magma ring is the failsafe for anything that still falls in. Defend in depth and no single breach loses the base.

Quick answers

+How tall does a wall need to be to stop mobs?
Three solid blocks stops walking mobs (zombies have 1.95-block height and can't jump 3). Add a 4th overhang block so spiders, which climb vertical walls, can't crest the top.
+Do mobs spawn inside a walled base?
Yes, if it's dark. Walls block mobs walking in, but hostiles spawn on any block at light level 0. Keep every floor tile at light level 8 or higher with lamps or glowstone every 7 blocks.
+Does a water moat actually stop mobs?
It stops most. Zombies and skeletons won't path across water more than 2 wide and sink/drown; a 3-wide moat is safe. Spiders can still jump 1 block, so keep the moat at least 2 wide with steep sides.
+What light level prevents mob spawns?
Hostile mobs spawn at light level 0 in Java (7 or below on older logic). Keeping light at 8+ everywhere fully spawn-proofs the interior. Use the F3 debug screen to read the light value of a block.
+Are magma blocks good for base defense?
Yes. Magma deals 1 damage every half-second to any mob standing on it and ignores armor. A magma-floored moat or pit burns down mobs that fall in without you firing a shot.
+Can creepers still blow up my wall?
Only if they reach it. Keep them outside the moat and they detonate harmlessly across the gap. A 3-wide moat plus a 3-block wall means a creeper can't get within blast range of the structure.
