How to Beat a Vindicator

A vindicator standing on the ground at night, with a player beside it for scale

Our own render, made for this page.

Inside a woodland mansion an axe-swinging vindicator will two-shot a careless player. Bait the wind-up, dodge the swing and burst its 24 HP down. The shield you would normally rely on is the one thing that does not work here.

Why the shield fails
An iron axe, the weapon every vindicator spawns holdingAxes disable it
A connecting axe locks your shield for five seconds, which is longer than the fight usually lasts.
Java + Bedrock
Its own strength
A netherite sword, the answer to a vindicator5, before the axe
That is the mob's attack attribute. The iron axe in its hand is added on top of it.
Java
How fast it closes
Leather boots, for the speed you are not going to outrun0.35
Quicker than a zombie and quicker than you walk, so backing away in a straight line does not work.
Java + Bedrock
What it is worth
An emerald, the vindicator drop12 XP
More than double a zombie, plus an emerald if you land the killing blow yourself.
Bedrock
A vindicator rendered to scale next to a player, for a sense of its real height

To scale against a player. A vindicator is exactly your height, which is part of why a mansion corridor gives you no room to read the swing.

Which number is which

Vindicator damage is the most argued-about figure in any mansion guide, and the reason is that two different numbers both deserve to be called correct. The mob's own attack strength is 5, scaled by difficulty to 3.5 on Easy and 7.5 on Hard. On top of that it is handed an iron axe the moment it spawns, and the axe adds its own weight to the swing. The larger totals you see quoted are the whole package, mob plus weapon.

BedrockThere is a real edition split underneath it too: the vindicator's own strength is 5 on Java and 8 on Bedrock. Same mob, same axe, harder swing.

Why the shield is a trap here

Against almost every hostile mob the shield is the right answer. Against a vindicator it is the wrong one, because an axe that connects disables your shield for five seconds. Five seconds is longer than this entire fight should take, so a player who blocks by reflex spends the decisive part of it holding a piece of wood that does nothing. Use it once to read the wind-up, then put it away and move.

The fight, step by step

1

Gear up before the room

Diamond or netherite armor with Protection, a Sharpness sword, golden apples and a totem; a vindicator hits for 13 on Hard, so do not walk in with iron.

2

Do not rely on the shield

A vindicator's axe disables your shield for 5 seconds when it connects, so block to read the swing once, then stop hiding behind it.

3

Bait the axe wind-up

Let it raise the axe, then sidestep or back off; the swing has a short cooldown that is your free window.

4

Burst its 24 HP

Sprint-hit with a Sharpness sword the instant the axe whiffs; a critical jump-hit chain drops its 24 health (12 hearts) in two or three swings.

5

Clear the mansion safely

Fight one doorway at a time so you never face a vindicator plus evokers or a 'Johnny' pack at once, and keep a totem in your off-hand.

Where they come from

Woodland mansions and raids, never a plain biome spawn. Its follow range is only twelve blocks, the shortest of any mob on this site, and in a mansion that is a disadvantage rather than a mercy: twelve blocks is roughly one room, so you will not see one coming down a corridor. You will open a door and it will already be inside your range.

Gear, timing, and common mistakes

  • Put the shield away after one read. Five seconds disabled is the whole fight.
  • Do not back up in a line. At 0.35 it moves faster than you walk; sidestep instead.
  • Fight in doorways. Twelve blocks of sight means room by room you control how many wake up.
  • Land the last hit yourself. The emerald only drops on a player kill.
  • Check which edition you are on. Its own strength is 8 on Bedrock against 5 on Java, and that changes what armour is enough.

Frequently asked questions

24

How do you beat a vindicator in Minecraft?

Wear good armor, bait its axe wind-up, sidestep the swing, and burst its 24 health down with a Sharpness sword using critical jump-hits. Do not stand toe to toe trading hits, because its axe deals up to 13 damage on Hard and disables your shield.

24

How much health does a vindicator have?

A vindicator has 24 health, which is 12 hearts. A Sharpness diamond or netherite sword can kill one in two or three hits, especially with critical jump-attacks.

13

How much damage does a vindicator do?

A vindicator's iron axe deals roughly 13 damage on Hard difficulty, 9 on Normal and 5 on Easy. That can two-shot an unarmored player, so wear enchanted armor before fighting one.

5

Is that 13 the mob or the axe?

Both together. The mob's own attack strength is 5, and the difficulty setting moves that to 3.5 on Easy and 7.5 on Hard. The iron axe it is given when it spawns is added on top of that, which is where the larger totals come from. This is why two guides can quote wildly different numbers and both be describing something real.

5 / 8

Is a vindicator stronger on Bedrock?

Its own attack strength is, yes: 8 on Bedrock against 5 on Java. That is one of the clearer illager differences between the editions, and it is worth knowing before you decide what armour a mansion trip needs.

5s

Does a shield block a vindicator?

A shield blocks the first hit, but a vindicator wields an axe, and axes disable shields for 5 seconds when they land an attack. Use the shield to read one swing, then switch to dodging and counter-attacking instead.

Johnny

What is a 'Johnny' vindicator?

A vindicator named 'Johnny' with a name tag becomes hostile to almost every other mob and player on sight, attacking relentlessly. Treat a Johnny as an aggressive threat and burst it down or run, since it will chase and swing without the usual pauses.

mansion

Where do vindicators spawn?

Vindicators spawn inside woodland mansions and as part of raids in villages. In a mansion, clear rooms one doorway at a time so you never face a vindicator alongside evokers or several others at once.

12

How close does it have to be to notice you?

Twelve blocks, which is unusually short: a zombie tracks you from 35 and a ravager from 32. In a mansion that works against you rather than for you, because twelve blocks is about one room, and you meet one at conversational distance with no warning.

For the iron axe, the emerald and the gear that beats them, look them up in the item database. The other illager in the same mansion is the evoker, which drops a totem of undying, and the one that leads a raid is the ravager.
