How to Beat the Warden

Our own render, made for this page. The player is in the shot because 2.9 blocks is hard to picture on its own.
You do not out-damage 500 HP and a wall-piercing sonic boom. Sneak, muffle, loot, and run before the fourth shriek.
The short answer
Best weapon
none at allAll it drops is one sculk catalyst, and it pays 500 health worth of fighting for 5 experience. There is nothing to win here.
Java + Bedrock
Best protection
wool and crouchingIt hunts vibrations, so silence beats armour. Nothing you wear reduces the sonic boom by a single point.
Java + Bedrock
Easiest trick
15 blocks of distanceThe ranged attack only starts inside 15 blocks flat. Outside that it has to walk, and it walks slower than you sprint.
Java
Biggest danger
10 through everythingThe sonic boom skips armour, skips a raised shield and skips Protection, and no block in the way stops it.
Java
Survive the deep dark, do not fight it
1
Know the rules
The Warden has 500 HP, hits for 15 hearts melee and fires a sonic boom that goes through walls and ignores your shield. This is a stealth run, not a boss fight.
2
Stay crouched and off sculk
Sneak the whole time so sculk sensors and shriekers cannot hear your steps. Never walk on sculk, never sprint, and place wool to silence footsteps and block vibrations.
3
Manage the shriek count
A shrieker that hears you four times summons the Warden. Throw a snowball or an arrow away from you to bait sensors and reset the warning before it spawns.
4
Grab the loot fast
Loot the chests in the ancient city for echo shards, enchanted books and a Swift Sneak diamond hoe, then leave; you do not need to engage the Warden at all.
5
Run, do not fight
If it spawns, pearl away, dig into a wall, drink a milk to clear Darkness, and get further than 15 blocks flat and 20 up or down while you stop making vibrations; the Warden digs back underground after about 60 seconds with no target.
What you need

Wool to muffle footsteps

Ender pearls to escape

Light + a way to mark exits

Bow for the shriekers
What killing it actually pays
500
health to chew through
250 hearts, two and a half times an Ender Dragon.
5 XP
and only with the last hit
The reward is a formula: nothing at all if something else finishes it.
1 sculk catalyst
the entire drop
One item, no conditions and no Looting.
That is the whole trade. Every other boss in the game pays you for the fight; this one charges you for it. So the rest of this page is about walking away with your stuff, not about winning.
Its two attacks are not the same problem
Everything you do around a warden comes down to which of its two attacks you are inside of. One of them a wall stops. The other one it does not.
Up close: 30 damage
360 degree arc
- ✓A wall stops it. It has to reach you to swing.
- ✓Armour and a shield both work on this one.
- ✗It swings every 0.9 seconds and it does not need to look at you first.
- ✗15 hearts a hit, so full netherite still leaves this lethal in a few swings.
At range: 10 damage
the sonic boom
- ✗A wall does nothing. The damage lands whether or not anything is in the way.
- ✗Armour, shield and Protection are all skipped.
- ✓It needs you within 15 blocks flat, 20 up or down.
- ✓It charges for 1.7 seconds first, and cannot fire again for 2 seconds.
Why a wall does not stop the sonic boom
This is the line most guides get wrong, ours included until we read the class. Stepping behind a block does not cancel a sonic boom that is already charging, because nothing in the behaviour looks at what is between you.
skippedYour armour points
skippedA raised shield
skippedProtection on that armour
skippedA block between the two of you
The behaviour checks one thing before it fires: are you within 15 blocks flat and 20 up or down. Then it draws the particle line and deals the 10 damage. Ducking behind a block does not interrupt it, which is why the answer is distance and not cover: step outside 15 blocks and the attack cannot start.
How it hears you
It listens, it does not look
It carries a vibration listener and a vibration damper of its own, so it tracks the sound you make and not the light you carry.
Anger 35 per disturbance
It turns hostile at 80 anger and calms below 40, and it loses one point every second, so two noises inside a minute is what turns a sniff into a chase.
A thrown item is only 10
That is the whole trick behind a snowball: it angers the spot it lands on, up to 30 blocks away, for a third of what your own footstep costs.
Follow range 24 or 30
Java gives it 24 blocks and Bedrock 30, so the same escape is six blocks shorter on Java.
Darkness lasts 13 seconds
It comes from both: the warden refreshes it every 6 seconds within 20 blocks, and a shrieker throws it 40 blocks wide the moment it goes off.
Untouchable for 6.7 seconds
While it climbs out of the ground it takes no damage at all, so hitting it on the way up costs you the head start and nothing else.
How many shrieks before it turns up

shriek 1
warning level 1, nothing spawns

shriek 2
warning level 2, nothing spawns

shriek 3
warning level 3, nothing spawns

shriek 4
a warden is summoned
The counter is on you, not on the block. A shrieker only raises it once every 10 seconds, it shares the same level with every player within 16 blocks, and the level drops back by one every 10 minutes you stay quiet. A shrieker also refuses to warn at all while a warden is already nearby, which is why the fourth shriek is the one that matters and never the fifth.
How big it actually is

Both boxes are drawn the way F3+B draws them. The warden is 2.9 blocks tall and 0.9 wide, so it is a head and a half above you and still narrow enough to walk down any corridor you can.
Quick answers
?How do you beat the Warden in Minecraft?
You do not really beat it, you avoid it. Sneak everywhere so sculk sensors cannot hear you, lay wool to muffle your steps, and keep the shrieker from hearing you four times. Grab the ancient city loot and leave; if the Warden spawns, pearl away, get outside the 15 blocks its sonic boom needs, and let it dig back underground after about 60 seconds.
?How much health does the Warden have?
The Warden has 500 health, which is 250 hearts, far more than the 200 of an Ender Dragon. It does not regenerate and it takes no reduced damage, it simply has more health than anything you can carry damage for, so out-damaging it in melee is not a plan.
?Can you actually kill the Warden?
Technically yes with a lot of preparation, sweet berry or magma damage stacking and many totems, but it is a terrible idea. It deals 15 hearts a melee hit and a sonic boom that pierces walls and ignores shields for another 5. The intended play is stealth and escape, not a kill.
?How does wool help against the Warden?
Wool blocks sculk-sensor vibrations and silences your footsteps when you walk on it. Placing a wool path through the ancient city lets you move without pinging sensors or charging the shriekers, which is the core of staying alive.
?What is the Warden's sonic boom?
When it cannot reach you it charges for 1.7 seconds and fires a ranged sonic boom that travels through blocks, ignores armor and shields, and hits for 10 damage. Blocks do not stop it and there is no line of sight check in the behaviour at all, so the counter is distance: outside 15 blocks flat it cannot start.
?What loot is in the ancient city?
Ancient city chests can hold echo shards (for the recovery compass), Swift Sneak and Soul Speed enchanted books, a Swift Sneak III diamond hoe, enchanted golden apples, music discs and other rare items. That loot is the reason to go, and you can get it all without fighting the Warden.
?How far does the sonic boom reach?
It needs you within 15 blocks horizontally and 20 blocks up or down. Those two numbers are the only condition the game checks before it fires, so height counts for less than you would hope: a ceiling four blocks up puts you well inside the vertical reach.
?Does the sonic boom go through walls?
Yes. The behaviour never asks whether it can see you; it measures the distance, draws a line of particles from its chest to your eyes and applies the 10 damage. A wall changes nothing except that it cannot walk to you.
?Does armour help against the Warden?
Against the melee swing yes, against the sonic boom no. The sonic boom is built to skip armour, shields and Protection alike, so none of them take anything off it.
?How many times does a shrieker shriek before the Warden spawns?
Four. Each shriek raises your warning level by one and only the fourth one summons anything. A shrieker cannot raise the level more than once every 10 seconds, the level is shared with any player within 16 blocks, and it drops back by one every 10 minutes you stay quiet.
?How long does Darkness last?
13 seconds each time it is applied. A sculk shrieker throws it 40 blocks wide when it goes off, and a warden standing near you refreshes it every 6 seconds within 20 blocks, which is why it feels permanent while it is around. Milk clears it.
?When does the Warden dig back underground?
It needs 60 seconds without being disturbed before it will start, and the burrowing itself takes another 5 seconds. Coming up takes about 6.7 seconds, and it cannot be hurt at all during that, so hitting it while it emerges only wastes the head start.
?Does the Warden give any experience?
Five, and only when a player lands the final blow; the reward is written as a formula, not a number. Together with a single drop, one sculk catalyst, that is the entire payout for 500 health.
