How to Beat a Guardian

A guardian hovering above the prismarine floor of an ocean monument, with a player beside it

Our own render, made for this page.

The guardian fight is a sight-line puzzle dressed as a boss. Its laser charges for four seconds before it fires, and a single block between you and its eye cancels the whole thing. Pillar up, peek out for damage, and 30 HP melts fast. Here is the loadout and the rhythm.

To scale against a player. A guardian is a cube about 0.85 blocks across, smaller than it feels when one is charging at you.

The attack is two hits, not one

Almost every guardian guide gives the laser a single damage number. That is not how the attack is built. When the four-second charge completes, two separate hits land in the same instant. First the beam, counted as indirect magic: 1 damage, or 3 if the world is on Hard. Then, immediately after, an ordinary melee hit using the guardian's attack strength, which is 6 on Normal, 4 on Easy and 9 on Hard.

BeamNormal: 1 + 6 = 7

Three and a half hearts from one completed beam, which is why iron armour holds up for a while.

Java
HardHard: 3 + 9 = 12

Six hearts. Two completed beams on Hard will kill an unarmoured player outright.

Java

An elder guardian adds 2 more to the beam half on top of that. None of this happens if the charge never completes, which is the entire argument for fighting from behind a pillar rather than trying to out-armour it.

The pillar-and-peek rhythm

Treat every guardian like a turret with a wind-up. Stand behind a monument pillar, wait for the beam to start growing, and stay hidden the full charge so it cancels. The instant the charge resets, step out, land two or three hits, and slide back to cover before the next lock-on. Guardians have only 30 HP, so two clean peek windows with a Sharpness V sword finish the job. For elder guardians, drink milk to wash off Mining Fatigue before you commit, and bring a Power bow so you can chip from cover without triggering thorns spikes.

The fight, step by step

1

Gear for the deep

Bring Depth Strider III boots, a Respiration III helmet, and Aqua Affinity so you can move, see, and mine underwater. A Potion of Night Vision and Water Breathing keep the fight readable for 8 minutes.

2

Read the laser tell

A guardian's eye locks on and a purple-to-yellow beam grows for four seconds before it fires. The growing beam is your countdown, not a hit yet.

3

Break line of sight

The moment the beam starts charging, duck behind a prismarine pillar or wall. Blocked sight cancels the laser entirely. This is the whole fight: pillar, peek, pillar.

4

Burst DPS between beams

A guardian has 30 HP (15 hearts). Pop out right after a beam misses and land 2-3 hits with a Sharpness V diamond or netherite sword for ~6-7 each. Retreat before the next charge.

5

Watch the spikes

When a guardian's orange spikes are out it reflects melee thorns damage. Hit it while spikes are retracted, or pelt it with a Power bow from cover to skip the reflection entirely.

Where they come from

Nowhere except an ocean monument. A guardian has no biome spawn at all: it is written into the monument's own spawn list, at a hundred percent of that list, in groups of two to four. That is unusual, and it has a practical consequence. You cannot bump into one by accident the way you can with a drowned in a river, and a monument you have cleared stays clear until the game spawns a new group inside it.

Gear, timing, and common mistakes

  • Cover beats armour. A cancelled beam does zero. No amount of protection turns 12 damage on Hard into zero, and a pillar does exactly that.
  • Count four seconds, not two. The charge is eighty ticks. If you have been ducking out after two seconds, you have been stepping into the hit.
  • Bow through the spikes. The thorns reflection only triggers on melee, so a Power bow from cover ignores that half of the fight completely.
  • The XP is worth it. Ten per guardian is double a zombie, and a monument holds a lot of them.
  • Bring milk for the elders, not for the guardians. Mining Fatigue comes from the three elder guardians, not from the ordinary ones, so a normal guardian fight never needs it.

Frequently asked questions

1+6

How much damage does the guardian laser do?

The beam itself does 1 damage, and 3 on Hard. But it never arrives alone: the same attack immediately follows with a normal melee hit worth 6, or 4 on Easy and 9 on Hard. So a completed attack is 7 on Normal and 12 on Hard. It can hit you through water but never through a solid block.

cover

How do I cancel the laser?

Break line of sight. As soon as the beam appears, put a block, pillar, or wall between you and the guardian's eye and the laser fizzles out with no damage.

30

How much health does a guardian have?

30 HP, which is 15 hearts. A Sharpness V netherite sword crit kills it in 3 hits; a Power V bow drops it in 2-3 arrows from cover.

4s

How long is the beam charge?

Four seconds, or eighty ticks. That is far longer than most ranged attacks in the game and it is the entire reason the pillar-and-peek rhythm works: you always have time to get behind something.

2

What are the spikes for?

Extended orange spikes reflect 2 thorns damage when you melee the guardian. Strike only when spikes are retracted, or use a bow so the reflection never applies.

no

Do guardians follow you onto land?

No. Guardians flop and suffocate out of water. Lure one into shallows or a 1-deep channel and it loses mobility, making it trivial to finish.

gear

What gear do I need for an ocean monument?

Depth Strider III, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity, a Sharpness sword, a Power bow, Water Breathing and Night Vision potions, plus milk to clear Mining Fatigue from the elder guardians.

6 / 5

Is a guardian slower on Bedrock?

Its numbers differ in two places. The melee half of its attack is 6 on Java and 5 on Bedrock, and the movement figures in the two editions are written on different scales, so a direct comparison of the speed value is not meaningful. The health, 30, is the same on both.

For prismarine, sea lanterns and what they build into, look them up in the item database. The other mob in the same water is the drowned, with its thrown trident, and when you are ready for a real boss there is the ender dragon, with its phases and crystals.
