Because a shulker box keeps its contents as an item, a loader fills the box while it sits in the world and then breaks it to pack everything away. The whole machine is one dispenser to place the box, hoppers to fill it, and a piston to break it again.

Breaking it is the part that goes wrong

A shulker box broken by a piston drops as an item with its contents intact, but a box broken while items are still moving loses whatever was in transit. A short delay between the last hopper transfer and the piston is what keeps that from happening.

Match the loader to what you actually ship

A loader that fills boxes with mixed items is far more work than one that fills a box with a single stackable item from a farm. For most bases the useful version sits at the end of one farm, not at the end of the sorting system.
