How to Fix Minecraft Launcher Crashes

Fix the Minecraft launcher crashing, not opening, or freezing. Covers cache corruption, runtime issues, repair steps, and alternative launchers.

How to Fix Minecraft Launcher Crashes

The Problem

Minecraft Launcher crashes on startup
Launcher freezes on the loading screen
"Minecraft Launcher has stopped working" error
Launcher opens briefly then closes

The Minecraft launcher is a separate application from the game itself. When the launcher crashes, you cannot start the game at all. Launcher crashes are caused by corrupt cache files, runtime issues, or conflicts with system software. This is different from the game crashing, which happens after the launcher successfully starts the game process.

Quick Fix

Reset the launcher by deleting its cache. On Windows, navigate to %AppData%\..\Local\Packages\Microsoft.4297127D64EC6_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache for the Microsoft Store version, or %AppData%\.minecraft\launcher_profiles.json for the standalone version. Delete the cache folder or launcher_profiles.json and restart.

Step-by-Step Diagnosis

  1. Restart your computer. A stale process or locked file can prevent the launcher from starting. A reboot clears this.
  2. Run as administrator. Right-click the launcher shortcut and select "Run as administrator". Permission issues on some systems prevent the launcher from writing to its data directory.
  3. Delete launcher cache. For the standalone launcher: delete launcher_log.txt, launcher_profiles.json, and the launcher/ folder inside .minecraft/. For the Microsoft Store version: go to Windows Settings, Apps, find Minecraft Launcher, and click "Reset".
  4. Update the launcher. Download the latest standalone launcher from minecraft.net/download. Install it over the existing installation.
  5. Check Windows Event Viewer. Open Event Viewer and look under Windows Logs, Application for error events around the time the launcher crashed. This sometimes reveals DLL conflicts or runtime errors.
  6. Reinstall the launcher. Uninstall the launcher through Windows Settings or Control Panel. Delete any remaining files in %AppData%\.minecraft\launcher/. Download and install fresh from the official website.
  7. Try an alternative launcher. If the official launcher consistently crashes, try Prism Launcher or ATLauncher as a diagnostic step. If these work, the issue is specific to the official launcher installation.

Common Causes

  • Corrupt cache files. The launcher caches metadata, profiles, and downloaded files. A corrupt cache prevents startup.
  • Antivirus interference. Security software occasionally blocks the launcher from executing or accessing the internet. Add the launcher to your antivirus exclusion list.
  • Outdated launcher version. Old launcher versions may not be compatible with current authentication systems. Update to the latest version.
  • Microsoft Store app issues. The Microsoft Store version of the launcher has known reliability issues. The standalone launcher from minecraft.net is generally more stable.
  • Conflicting overlay software. Discord overlay, GeForce Experience, and similar tools can interfere with the launcher's Electron-based UI.

FAQ

Will reinstalling the launcher delete my worlds?

No. Worlds are stored in .minecraft/saves/, which is separate from the launcher files. Reinstalling the launcher does not touch your game data.

Should I use the Microsoft Store launcher or the standalone one?

The standalone launcher from minecraft.net is generally more reliable and easier to troubleshoot. The Microsoft Store version has additional update and permission complexity.

My launcher crashes only when I log in. What does this mean?

This usually means the authentication process fails. Check your internet connection, disable VPN, and verify your Microsoft account credentials at account.microsoft.com.

Windows-Specific Launcher Fixes

The official Minecraft launcher on Windows has some platform-specific issues and fixes:

  • Xbox App dependency. The launcher requires the Xbox app services to be running for authentication. If you uninstalled or disabled Xbox-related services, the launcher may crash during login. Reinstall the Xbox app from the Microsoft Store.
  • Gaming Services reset. Open PowerShell as administrator and run Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.GamingServices | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers, then reinstall Gaming Services from the Microsoft Store. This fixes various authentication and login crashes.
  • Windows Store cache. Run wsreset.exe from the Start menu to clear the Microsoft Store cache. This can fix update and download issues with the Store version of the launcher.
  • Compatibility mode. Right-click the launcher, go to Properties, Compatibility, and try running in compatibility mode for Windows 8 or Windows 10. Some systems have compatibility issues with the launcher's Electron framework.

When to Use an Alternative Launcher

If the official launcher consistently crashes despite all troubleshooting, consider switching to a third-party launcher. Prism Launcher, ATLauncher, and MultiMC are legitimate alternatives that support the same Minecraft accounts and game files. They often have better stability because they use simpler UI frameworks and have more transparent error reporting. Your worlds and settings carry over because all launchers use the same .minecraft/ directory structure. Third-party launchers also offer better mod management, custom Java path configuration, and separate instances for different modpacks.
