Minecraft Diamond vs Netherite, Is the Upgrade Worth It?
Full comparison of diamond and netherite gear in Minecraft, durability, damage, armor points, knockback resistance, fire immunity, and how to upgrade.
Diamond gear has been the endgame standard since Minecraft's earliest days. Netherite, added in 1.16, sits one tier above diamond. But is the upgrade actually worth the effort? This guide compares every stat and practical consideration so you can decide.
Durability
Netherite tools and armor last roughly 30% longer than diamond equivalents. A diamond pickaxe has 1,561 durability; a netherite pickaxe has 2,031. With Unbreaking III the difference becomes even more pronounced over time. If you mine heavily, the extra 470 uses per tool add up.
Damage and mining speed
A netherite sword deals 8 base damage versus diamond's 7. That one extra point of damage (half a heart) does not sound like much, but it reduces the number of hits needed to kill most mobs by one. Mining speed is also slightly faster with netherite tools, though the difference is barely noticeable in practice.
Armor and knockback resistance
A full set of netherite armor provides 20 armor points (same as diamond) but adds 3 armor toughness points compared to diamond. More importantly, each piece of netherite armor gives +1 knockback resistance, totaling +4 for a full set. This means you barely move when hit, which is a massive advantage in PvP and against mobs that deal knockback like Iron Golems and Ravagers.
Fire and lava immunity
Netherite items do not burn in fire or lava. If you die in lava, your netherite gear floats and survives until you come back for it. Diamond items burn and are gone forever. This single property makes netherite worth the upgrade for anyone who spends time in the Nether.
How to get netherite
Mine ancient debris in the Nether at Y levels 8-22 (Y: 15 is the sweet spot). Ancient debris is blast-resistant, so the fastest method is bed mining or TNT mining at those levels. Smelt ancient debris into netherite scraps, combine four scraps with four gold ingots to make one netherite ingot, then combine the ingot with a diamond tool or armor piece on a smithing table using the appropriate template.
The smithing template bottleneck
Since 1.20, upgrading to netherite requires a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template found in Bastion Remnants. Templates are consumed on use but can be duplicated with seven diamonds and a block of netherrack on a crafting table. This adds a significant cost, each upgrade effectively costs eight diamonds (one for the template duplication, seven surrounding it) on top of the netherite ingot.
Is the upgrade worth it?
For casual survival: diamond is perfectly fine. You can beat every boss and complete every challenge with diamond gear. For servers with PvP, the knockback resistance alone makes netherite mandatory. For Nether exploration, the lava immunity saves you from catastrophic item loss. If you have the resources, always upgrade your most important tool (usually the pickaxe) first, then the sword, then armor.
Quick comparison table
- Sword damage: Diamond 7 vs Netherite 8
- Pickaxe durability: Diamond 1,561 vs Netherite 2,031
- Armor toughness (full set): Diamond 8 vs Netherite 12
- Knockback resistance: Diamond 0 vs Netherite 4
- Burns in lava: Diamond yes vs Netherite no
