Top 10 Minecraft Enchantments

The ten best enchantments in Minecraft ranked by usefulness, Mending, Unbreaking, Fortune, Efficiency, Protection, and more, with tips on how to get them.

Minecraft has over 40 enchantments, but some are dramatically more useful than others. This ranking considers how broadly an enchantment applies, how much it improves gameplay, and how essential it is for endgame survival. Every enchantment listed here should be a priority on your gear.

1. Mending

Mending repairs your gear using XP orbs. Any item with Mending lasts forever as long as you collect experience. Without Mending, even netherite tools eventually break and need replacement. Mending cannot be obtained from an enchanting table, it is a treasure enchantment found through fishing, chest loot, or Librarian villager trades. Getting a Mending Librarian is one of the most important early priorities in any survival world.

2. Unbreaking III

Unbreaking gives each use a chance to not consume durability. At level III, tools last roughly four times longer. Combined with Mending, your gear becomes effectively indestructible. Unbreaking is available on every tool, weapon, and armor piece in the game. It should be on everything you own.

3. Fortune III

Fortune increases drop quantities from ore blocks, making diamond mining over twice as productive. A vein of 4 diamond ore yields roughly 8-9 diamonds with Fortune III instead of 4. It also boosts coal, lapis, redstone, emerald, copper, quartz, and amethyst drops. Fortune on your main pickaxe is the single biggest resource multiplier in the game.

4. Efficiency V

Efficiency dramatically increases mining speed. At level V with a netherite pickaxe, you can instant-mine stone, netherrack, and many other blocks. This turns strip mining from a slow grind into rapid tunnel carving. Efficiency V is available from enchanting tables at level 30 and is one of the most common high-level enchantments.

5. Protection IV

Protection reduces all incoming damage by up to 16% per armor piece. A full set of Protection IV armor reduces total damage from all sources by up to 64%. It is the most versatile armor enchantment because it works against melee, projectiles, fire, explosions, and fall damage. Unless you have a specific reason to use Blast or Fire Protection, Protection IV on every piece is the default.

6. Sharpness V

Sharpness adds 3 extra damage per hit to all targets. It works on every mob and on players, making it the most versatile damage enchantment. Smite V deals more damage to undead, but Sharpness covers everything including PvP. Your primary sword should always have Sharpness V.

7. Feather Falling IV

Feather Falling reduces fall damage by 48% at level IV. Combined with Protection IV on boots, fall damage becomes negligible. This enchantment saves lives constantly, missed jumps, unexpected cliffs, Ender Pearl teleportation damage, and accidental drops into ravines. It only goes on boots and should always be there.

8. Looting III

Looting increases mob drop quantities and rare drop chances. Wither skeleton skull drop rate goes from 2.5% to 5.5%. Ender Pearl drops increase. Blaze rod drops increase. It also adds extra common drops (bones, arrows, string, rotten flesh). Looting III on your sword makes every mob encounter more productive. It does not affect XP.

9. Power V

Power is the bow's damage enchantment. At level V a fully drawn shot deals 23 damage (11.5 hearts), enough to one-shot most mobs. The bow is already the best ranged weapon for sustained damage, and Power V makes it lethal at any range. Combined with Flame for fire damage over time, a Power V bow is one of the strongest weapons in the game.

10. Silk Touch

Silk Touch lets you pick up blocks in their placed form: glass, grass blocks, ice, ender chests, bookshelves, coral, and more. Without it, many blocks are destroyed or converted when mined. While Fortune is better for ore mining, Silk Touch is essential for building, relocating setups, and collecting blocks that cannot be obtained otherwise. Keep a Silk Touch pickaxe in your toolkit alongside your Fortune one.

How to get the best enchantments

  • Enchanting table: requires bookshelves (15 for max level). Enchant at level 30 for the best results. If the offered enchantments are bad, enchant a cheap item (wooden shovel) to reset the options.
  • Villager trading: breed Librarian villagers (lectern workstation) and reroll their trades by breaking and replacing the lectern until they offer the book you want. Lock the trade by buying from them once.
  • Anvil combining: merge two books with the same enchantment to get a higher level. Combine in pairs to minimize anvil penalty costs.
