Quick answers
?
How do you build a Nether base in Minecraft?
Carve or wall off a safe pocket near your portal, then build it from fireproof blocks like nether brick or obsidian so lava and fire cannot reach you. Light it fully so nothing spawns inside, keep the portal within the walls, and seal any open sightlines to ghasts.
?
What blocks are safe to build with in the Nether?
Non-flammable ones: nether brick, blackstone, obsidian, stone bricks, deepslate and concrete. Avoid wood and wool near lava. Obsidian also resists ghast fireballs, so it is ideal for the outer shell and the portal frame.
?
How do you protect a Nether base from ghasts?
Wall off the open sides so ghasts cannot see or shoot you, since their fireballs only fly in a straight line. An obsidian or solid wall, a roof, and no large open windows facing the caverns keep their fireballs out.
?
Should you build near your portal?
Yes. Keep the base wrapped around your portal so you arrive somewhere safe and lit, never out in the open. Many players build a portal hub here linking several Overworld portals through one protected Nether room.
?
How do you light a Nether base?
Use glowstone, shroomlight, lanterns or sea lanterns. The Nether is dark and full of spawns, so light every surface inside and the approach to your portal to keep it clear of hostile mobs.

Does the build work the same on Bedrock?
Yes. Fireproof blocks, obsidian, portals and lighting behave the same on Java and Bedrock, so the same safe Nether base design works on either edition.
