Quick answers

?
How do you build a starter house in Minecraft?
Clear a flat spot, lay a small foundation such as 7x7 cobblestone, raise oak plank walls about three blocks high with log corner posts, leave a doorway and a window, then cap it with a simple gable roof. Add a door and torches and you have a safe first-night base.
?
What blocks do you need for a starter house?
Just the basics you already gather on day one: oak logs turned into planks, cobblestone from mining, a door, some glass for windows and torches for light. A crafting table, furnace, chest and bed go inside.
?
How big should a starter house be?
Keep it small for night one, around 6x6 or 7x7 inside, so it is fast to build and easy to light. You can always knock out a wall and extend it into a proper base once you are established.
?
How do you stop mobs spawning in or around it?
Light the inside and the area just outside with torches so no spot is dark, and seal every gap with blocks or a door. Building on a hill or against a cliff also cuts down the open sides mobs can reach.
?
How do you make a starter house look good?
Frame the corners with oak logs, break the walls up with a window or two, and use stairs or a darker wood like spruce for a sloped roof. Small touches like a path and a fence turn a box into a home.
?
Does the build work the same on Java and Bedrock?
Yes. Placing blocks, doors, glass and torches works identically on both editions, so the same starter house design and steps apply whether you play Java or Bedrock.
