How to Build a Wall and Gate

A thick curtain wall, battlements, towers and a gatehouse with a gate that opens.

  • Thick and tall. Two-plus blocks deep and high enough that mobs and players cannot jump or pillar over.
  • One way in. A single gated entrance is far easier to hold than a long stretch of open wall.
  • Height advantage. Towers and a gatehouse let you see and shoot down over the wall.

Build it in five

    Set the line
    Mark the wall line on the ground first, square or following the terrain, so the whole circuit is planned before you build up.

    Raise the curtain
    Build the curtain wall thick (two or three blocks) and tall enough to block jumps, in stone, brick or a mixed palette.

    Crown it
    Top the wall with crenellations: alternating raised merlons and gaps so it reads as battlements and gives cover.

    Towers and gatehouse
    Add taller towers along the run and a wider gatehouse over the entrance for height, strength and a lookout.

    Hang the gate
    Set a gate in the arch: doors, a fence-and-trapdoor portcullis or an iron door, framed by torches and a banner.
