How to Build a Wall and Gate
A thick curtain wall, battlements, towers and a gatehouse with a gate that opens.
- Thick and tall. Two-plus blocks deep and high enough that mobs and players cannot jump or pillar over.
- One way in. A single gated entrance is far easier to hold than a long stretch of open wall.
- Height advantage. Towers and a gatehouse let you see and shoot down over the wall.

- 1Set the lineMark the wall line on the ground first, square or following the terrain, so the whole circuit is planned before you build up.
- 2Raise the curtainBuild the curtain wall thick (two or three blocks) and tall enough to block jumps, in stone, brick or a mixed palette.
- 3Crown itTop the wall with crenellations: alternating raised merlons and gaps so it reads as battlements and gives cover.
- 4Towers and gatehouseAdd taller towers along the run and a wider gatehouse over the entrance for height, strength and a lookout.
- 5Hang the gateSet a gate in the arch: doors, a fence-and-trapdoor portcullis or an iron door, framed by torches and a banner.
Quick answers
How do you build a wall and gate in Minecraft?
Mark the wall line on the ground, raise a thick curtain wall, then crown it with crenellations. Add corner towers and a gatehouse over the entrance, and hang a gate in the arch: doors, an iron door or a fence-and-trapdoor portcullis, framed with torches and a banner.
How thick should a defensive wall be?
At least two blocks thick so it cannot be broken through quickly and looks solid, three or more for a serious fortress. Make it tall enough that mobs and players cannot jump or pillar over, usually four or more blocks above the ground.
How do I make a working gate?
Moving options are double doors, an iron door with buttons or plates, or a piston gate. For a portcullis look, stack fence gates and trapdoors in the arch or use iron bars; a piston-raised wall of blocks gives an actual rising gate.
How do I build crenellations?
Run a row of blocks along the wall top, then remove every other one for alternating raised merlons and gaps. Add a walkway behind them so you can stand and shoot through the gaps under cover.
What blocks suit a fortified wall?
Stone bricks, cobblestone, deepslate and andesite for the wall and towers, dark oak or spruce for the gate, iron bars for a portcullis, plus chiseled or cracked variants, banners and torches for detail and heraldry.
Does the build work the same on Bedrock?
Yes. Walls, towers, doors, iron bars and redstone gates all behave the same on Java and Bedrock, so the wall and gate build the same way on either edition.
