How to Find a Trial Chamber in Minecraft

Trial chambers are the copper-and-tuff dungeons added in 1.21. They hide in the deepslate layer, they are surprisingly common, and they hold the trial spawners and vaults that drop maces, wind charges, and ominous loot. Here is the fastest way to land in one.

Where they generate

Chambers spawn deep underground, roughly between Y -40 and Y 0, sitting in the deepslate. They appear in most overworld biomes and are fairly common, often closer than the nearest village. They never touch the surface, so you will not see them while walking around.

How to find one fast

1Get down to the deepslate. Dig a staircase to about Y -20, the sweet spot for chamber generation.
2Open up big caves at that depth instead of mining blind. Chambers often connect to cave systems.
3Watch for materials that never generate naturally: tuff bricks, chiseled tuff, copper blocks, copper bulbs, and copper grates. That is a chamber wall.
4Playing with cheats? Run /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers and it prints the nearest coordinates.

What is inside

Trial spawnersSpawn waves of mobs that scale with nearby players. Clear them for rewards and trial keys.
VaultsOpen with a trial key for guaranteed loot. One reward per player per vault.
Ominous vaultsNeed an ominous trial key. The only source of the heavy core for a mace, plus the best enchants.
BreezeA wind mob in some spawners. Drops the breeze rod you need for the mace.
Free blocksCopper, tuff variants and decorated pots you can just mine on the way out.

Ominous vs normal trials

Drink an ominous bottle (or carry Bad Omen in) before you start, and the spawners turn ominous: harder waves, but they drop ominous trial keys that open the ominous vaults. Those are the only place the mace's heavy core and the best mace enchants come from. Do a normal clear first to learn the layout, then come back ominous.

Bedrock vs Java

The structure, depth, loot and mechanics are the same on both editions in 1.21. The only catch: /locate needs cheats on, which is per-world on Bedrock and via LAN or op on Java.

Quick answers

How rare are they?

Common. Most worlds have one within a few hundred blocks of spawn, all underground.

Can I reset a vault for more loot?

No. Each vault gives one reward per player, ever. Bring friends to share the keys.

Do I need an ominous trial for the mace?

You need an ominous vault for the heavy core, and ominous vaults only open during an ominous trial.

Will the spawners get harder with more players?

Yes. Trial spawners scale the wave size to how many players are nearby.

At what depth do trial chambers generate?

Deep underground, roughly between Y -40 and Y 0, sitting in the deepslate layer. They never touch the surface, so you will not spot one while walking around no matter how long you look.

How do you recognise a chamber wall?

By materials that never generate naturally down there: tuff bricks, chiseled tuff, copper blocks, copper bulbs and copper grates. Seeing any of those in a cave at deepslate level means you are already touching a chamber.

Is there a command to find one?

Yes, if cheats are on. Running /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers prints the coordinates of the nearest chamber, which turns the search into a walk.
