Hide the source
Tuck the light behind trapdoors, carpets, slabs or grates so the room is lit but you never see a bare torch.

Light the floor
Sink sea lanterns or glowstone under carpet, or set them as a glowing strip, so light comes up from the ground.

Recess and sconce
Carve alcoves for shroomlights, and use end rods or lanterns as neat wall sconces instead of stuck-on torches.

Keep every spot above the spawn light level, including corners, undersides and the roof, so nothing dark remains.
