Best Minecraft Armor Enchantments, Full Tier List

A ranked breakdown of every armor enchantment in Minecraft, from Protection IV to Thorns III. Learn which enchants to prioritise for survival, PvP and boss fights.

Why Armor Enchantments Matter

A full set of unenchanted netherite armor already absorbs 80 % of incoming damage, but the right enchantments push that even further while adding perks like automatic repair and knockback. Choosing the wrong combination wastes XP and anvil uses, so it pays to plan ahead. Below is a tier-by-tier ranking of every armor enchantment currently in the game, along with notes on when each one shines.

S-Tier, Must-Have on Every Set

Protection IV, The single most impactful enchantment for armor. Protection IV reduces all incoming damage types, melee, projectile, fire, explosion and even fall damage, by up to 16 % per piece. With four pieces at level IV you hit the enchantment protection cap of 64 %, which stacks on top of the armor bar reduction. No other defensive enchant comes close in general-purpose value.

Unbreaking III, Triples the effective durability of every armor piece. Because armor takes a hit on almost every mob encounter, Unbreaking III dramatically cuts your repair costs. Pair it with Mending and a piece of netherite can last thousands of play hours without ever breaking.

Mending, Channels XP orbs directly into durability repair instead of your experience bar. With a decent XP source, an enderman farm, a sculk farm, or even a few smelting furnaces, Mending means you never have to craft replacement gear. This is the single enchantment that transitions armor from a consumable into a permanent asset.

A-Tier, Situationally Excellent

Feather Falling IV (boots only), Reduces fall damage by 48 % before Protection is even calculated. Given how often players die to unexpected drops, ravines and ender pearl landings, Feather Falling is almost mandatory on boots. It stacks with Protection IV for near-immunity to fall damage.

Depth Strider III (boots only), Lets you move at normal walking speed underwater. Ocean monuments, underwater ruins and drowned farms all become far less painful with Depth Strider. It conflicts with Frost Walker, but Depth Strider wins in nearly every practical scenario.

Thorns III, Reflects a portion of melee damage back to the attacker. Thorns is controversial because it drains durability faster, but on a Mending and Unbreaking III set the durability cost is negligible. In PvP and mob-heavy situations, the reflected damage adds up quickly. Place it on the chestplate so the highest-durability piece absorbs the extra wear.

Respiration III (helmet only), Extends underwater breathing time by 45 seconds and slows suffocation damage. Combined with Depth Strider and a conduit, Respiration lets you operate underwater almost indefinitely.

B-Tier, Niche but Useful

Fire Protection IV, Reduces fire and lava damage by 32 % per piece and cuts burn time by 60 %. It conflicts with Protection, so you normally skip it. However, a single Fire Protection IV piece on an otherwise full-Protection set can be worthwhile for extended nether trips or blaze farming.

Blast Protection IV, Reduces explosion damage and knockback. Useful against creepers and end crystals in PvP, but Protection IV already covers explosions well enough for most survival play.

Projectile Protection IV, Counters skeleton fire, pillager crossbows and shulker bullets. Like the other specific protections, it conflicts with Protection and is only worth using in specialised PvP loadouts.

Frost Walker II (boots only), Freezes water beneath your feet into frosted ice. Fun for crossing oceans, but it conflicts with Depth Strider and can interfere with mob farms that rely on water flow. Use it on a dedicated travel pair of boots.

Soul Speed III (boots only), Increases movement speed on soul sand and soul soil. Essential for nether travel through soul sand valleys, but it drains boot durability while active and cannot be obtained from an enchanting table, only bartering with piglins or looting bastion remnants.

Swift Sneak III (leggings only), Lets you move at 75 % walking speed while crouching. Found exclusively in ancient city loot chests. Great for building on edges and for stealth in PvP scenarios.
