Best Minecraft Pickaxe Enchantments, Full Guide
Every pickaxe enchantment in Minecraft ranked. Efficiency V, Fortune III, Silk Touch, Mending and Unbreaking for the fastest and most profitable mining setup.
Your Pickaxe is Your Most Important Tool
You will use a pickaxe more than any other tool in Minecraft. Mining stone, ores, nether blocks and end stone consumes thousands of durability points across a single play session. The right enchantments turn a slow, resource-draining process into a fast, profitable operation. Getting the enchantment setup wrong, or worse, losing a max-enchanted pickaxe to lava, costs hours of progress. Here is every pickaxe enchantment ranked with clear guidance on when to use each one.
S-Tier Enchantments
Efficiency V, Increases mining speed dramatically. An Efficiency V netherite pickaxe with a Haste II beacon mines stone almost instantly, fast enough that you can sprint-mine a straight tunnel without stopping. Without Efficiency, mining feels sluggish by comparison. This is the single most impactful quality-of-life enchantment for any tool.
At Efficiency V on a netherite pickaxe, you break stone in one tick (0.05 seconds) with Haste II. Even without a beacon, the speed increase is substantial enough to justify always having this enchantment.
Fortune III, Multiplies ore drops without using extra durability. Diamond ore drops 1 diamond by default; with Fortune III, the average increases to 2.2 diamonds per ore block. Coal, lapis, emerald, redstone, copper, nether quartz, nether gold and amethyst all benefit from Fortune. Over the course of a mining session, Fortune III can triple or quadruple your total resource haul.
Fortune III also affects flint from gravel (100 % drop rate), glowstone dust from glowstone blocks (4 guaranteed), and seeds from tall grass. It is the single best enchantment for resource accumulation in the game.
Mending, Repairs the pickaxe with XP orbs. Since mining generates XP from ore blocks (coal, diamond, emerald, redstone, lapis, nether quartz and nether gold all drop XP when mined), a Mending pickaxe partially repairs itself just through normal use. Combined with occasional XP farm visits, a Mending pickaxe never breaks.
Unbreaking III, Triples effective durability. A netherite pickaxe has 2031 base durability; with Unbreaking III, that becomes approximately 8124 effective uses. This dramatically reduces how often you need to repair and ensures you never unexpectedly lose your pickaxe mid-session.
A-Tier Enchantments
Silk Touch, Makes blocks drop themselves instead of their normal drops. This is essential for collecting glass, ice, coral, grass blocks, mycelium, ender chests, bookshelves, bee nests and ore blocks you want to smelt later or store compactly. Silk Touch conflicts with Fortune, so you need two pickaxes.
Silk Touch also lets you pick up spawners on some servers, move ender chests without losing the ender pearls to craft a new one, and collect stone without it converting to cobblestone. Keep a Silk Touch pickaxe in your inventory at all times alongside your Fortune pickaxe.
B-Tier Enchantments
Curse of Vanishing, Makes the pickaxe disappear on death. This is actually useful in PvP contexts where you do not want enemies looting your gear. On a survival server without PvP, avoid it entirely.
The Two-Pickaxe System
Because Fortune and Silk Touch conflict, the optimal approach is to carry two pickaxes at all times:
- Fortune Pickaxe: Efficiency V, Fortune III, Unbreaking III, Mending
- Silk Touch Pickaxe: Efficiency V, Silk Touch, Unbreaking III, Mending
Use the Fortune pickaxe as your default miner. Switch to Silk Touch when you need to collect specific blocks like glass panes, ice, coral, ender chests or ore blocks for storage.
Enchanting Order for Minimum Anvil Cost
Anvil operations have a cumulative cost penalty. Each time an item is worked on an anvil, its "prior work penalty" increases. To stay under the 39-level "Too Expensive" cap:
- Combine Efficiency V and Unbreaking III on a book
- Combine Fortune III (or Silk Touch) and Mending on a second book
- Merge the two combined books into one super-book
- Apply the super-book to the pickaxe
This results in only two anvil operations on the pickaxe itself (the book combination, then the application), keeping the total cost well under the cap. If you apply enchantments one at a time, you risk hitting "Too Expensive" before finishing.
Pickaxe Material Tier
Enchantments matter more than material, but the base matters too:
- Netherite: 2031 durability, mines all blocks, does not burn in lava. The clear best choice for a permanent pickaxe.
- Diamond: 1561 durability, mines all blocks. Use until you acquire netherite.
- Iron: 250 durability, cannot mine ancient debris or crying obsidian. Fine for early-game branch mining but not worth enchanting heavily.
