How to Make a Cake

A cake is a food block you place and eat one slice at a time, seven bites in all, and it makes a fine birthday centrepiece with a candle. Tap the cake below to take a slice.

Right-click to eat a slice. 7 slices, each restores hunger.

The recipe

Milk on top, sugar and egg in the middle, wheat on the bottom.

Cake

You get the three milk buckets back empty.

How eating it works

You must place the cake on a block to eat it, and you cannot pick it back up. Right-click to take a slice: a cake has seven slices, each restoring two hunger, and you can only eat when your hunger bar is not full. It is the easiest food to share with friends.

Make it a birthday cake

Place a candle on top of the cake and light it with flint and steel for a birthday cake. Eating a slice pops the candle off, so relight a new one for each celebration. Candles come in all 16 dye colours.

Quick answers

How do you make a cake?

Three milk buckets across the top, sugar and egg and sugar across the middle, and three wheat across the bottom. That makes one cake.

Can you pick a cake back up?

No. Once a cake is placed it cannot be collected again; breaking it just destroys it. So place it where you want it.

How many times can you eat a cake?

Seven. A whole cake has seven slices, and each bite restores two hunger, so one cake feeds you (or friends) seven times.

Do you get the milk buckets back?

Yes. Crafting a cake returns your three buckets empty, so you only spend the milk, not the buckets.

How do you make a birthday cake?

Place a candle on top of a cake and light it. Eating a slice knocks the candle off, so light it again for the next celebration.

Do I need to be hungry to eat it?

Yes. Like most food, you can only eat a slice when your hunger bar is not full.

How much hunger does a full cake give?

Fourteen. Seven slices at two hunger each, so a whole cake restores 14 hunger points and 2.8 saturation total. That is more than a steak (8 hunger) but you have to place it first.

Can you eat a cake to heal a parrot or other mob?

No. Cake is a placed block, not a held food, so you cannot feed it to any mob. It does not breed or heal animals, it only feeds players who eat a slice. (Cookies, by contrast, kill parrots, so keep those away from them.)

How do you stack candles on a cake?

You can only put one candle on a cake. Trying to add a second does nothing. Use any of the 16 dyed candles or a plain candle, but it has to be a single candle, not a 2 to 4 candle cluster.

Why won't my cake let me place a candle?

The cake must be whole. Once you eat even one slice the top is no longer flat, so candles cannot go on a partly eaten cake. Place the candle first, then eat.

Does cake work as a redstone component?

Yes. A cake with a candle on top can be lit by a redstone signal, and an interaction with the cake (eating a slice) emits a comparator output, so it can act as a one shot trigger.

Gathering the ingredients

One cake costs three milk, three wheat, two sugar and one egg. Here is where each part comes from.

  • Milk: right-click a cow or mooshroom with three empty buckets. Iron for buckets is the slow part, so keep the buckets after crafting.
  • Wheat: three from a normal wheat farm. Plant seeds on hoed dirt next to water and wait for it to turn fully golden before harvesting.
  • Sugar: two, from one sugar cane each. Sugar cane grows on sand or dirt beside water.
  • Egg: one. Chickens drop an egg every 5 to 10 minutes, so a small coop covers cakes easily.

Common mistakes

The recipe is shapeless in the slots but the rows matter: milk has to be the top three, wheat the bottom three. Putting milk and wheat in the wrong rows gives nothing.

You cannot eat a cake while it sits in your inventory or hotbar. It must be placed on a solid block first, then right-clicked. Once placed it is gone for good, breaking it drops nothing.

Sweet berries, cookies and pumpkin pie are separate foods, not cake ingredients. A cake is only the nine items above, and it does not stack in your inventory, so it takes one full slot per cake.
