How to Survive the Creaking

It does not chase you. It waits for you to blink. The Creaking of the Pale Garden only moves when no one is watching, ignores every sword swing, and falls only when its heart breaks.

Threat file

Threat type
Ambusher, not a brawler
Spawns
At night, from a creaking heart in a Pale Garden
Movement
Only while no player can see it
Health
Immune to all direct attacks
Weakness
Its creaking heart, and daylight
Drops
Resin, only when the heart is broken

How to beat it, step by step

Follow the spine top to bottom. Every step assumes it is night and the Creaking is already up.

1
Do not swing at it
Hitting the Creaking does nothing at all, and it can knock you back. This fight is about its heart, never its body.
2
Keep it on screen
While any player can see it, the Creaking is frozen solid. Lock your camera on it and back away slowly, never blinking.
3
Find the creaking heart
It is a block glowing orange inside a nearby pale-oak trunk, the source that raised this Creaking. That is your real target.
4
Break the heart
Mine the creaking heart. The instant it breaks, the Creaking it spawned collapses into resin, no matter where it is standing.
5
Or just outlast the night
Creakings crumble on their own at first light. If you cannot reach the heart, survive or hide until dawn and the problem solves itself.

Do and don't

Do
  • Keep your camera locked on it
  • Go for the creaking heart, not the mob
  • Carry a pickaxe to break the heart fast
  • Bring a torch so you can keep it in sight
  • Retreat to open ground if it gets close
  • Wait for dawn if you are cornered
Don't
  • Attack the Creaking itself
  • Look away when it is near
  • Sprint past it blind in the dark
  • Expect any drop from hitting it
  • Corner yourself with no light
  • Assume it is slow once you blink

Quick answers

Can you kill the Creaking with a sword?

No. It takes zero damage from attacks. The only way to drop it is to break its creaking heart, or wait for daylight.

Does it really freeze when you look at it?

Yes. While any player has it on screen it cannot move at all. The danger is the instant you look away.

What does it drop?

Breaking its heart yields resin, which you can craft into resin bricks. Hitting the Creaking itself gives nothing.

Is it dangerous in daytime?

No. Creakings crumble at dawn and only rise again from the heart after dark.

Can I relocate a creaking heart?

You can mine and replace one, but it only raises a Creaking inside a Pale Garden, between two pale-oak logs, at night.

Can the creaking be killed by hitting it?

No. Damage dealt to the body is passed to its heart block instead, so the mob in front of you cannot be worn down. Finding and breaking the heart is the only way the encounter ends.

How does the creaking compare to an ordinary hostile mob?

Every other mob on this site ends when its health does: a zombie at 20, a ravager at 100, the warden at 500. The creaking is the one where that number is not the answer, which is why the usual gear checklist does not help you here.

Not sure where to meet one? Start with finding the Pale Garden. Once you have the resin, turn it into resin bricks. Full stats live in the mob databaseand every drop is on the items database.
