Uneasy Alliance: How to Bring a Ghast to the Overworld
Step-by-step guide to the Uneasy Alliance advancement. How to lure or push a Ghast through a Nether portal and kill it in the Overworld.
Uneasy Alliance requires you to kill a Ghast in the Overworld. Since Ghasts only spawn in the Nether, you must get one through a Nether portal. This is one of the most logistically challenging advancements because Ghasts are large, fly erratically and cannot fit through standard portals. This guide covers portal construction, Ghast luring strategies and the final kill.
The core challenge
A Ghast's hitbox is 4x4x4 blocks, but they can enter a portal if any part of their hitbox touches the portal blocks. The minimum portal size is 4 blocks wide and 5 blocks tall (inside dimensions), but building a larger portal makes it much easier for the Ghast to fly through. A portal that is 6-8 blocks wide and 6-8 blocks tall gives you the best odds.
Building the portal
- Choose a location. Build your portal in a Nether Wastes or Soul Sand Valley biome where Ghasts spawn frequently. Avoid building near lava lakes where the Ghast might fall in.
- Build big. Construct a portal frame at least 6 wide by 6 tall (inside dimensions). The maximum portal size is 23x23, so go as big as practical. A 6x8 portal works well.
- Flatten the area in front of the portal. Clear netherrack and other blocks in a 20-block radius on the Nether side so the Ghast has a clear flight path.
- Light the portal. Use flint and steel on the inside of the frame.
Luring the Ghast
Ghasts do not follow players and cannot be led with items. You need to manipulate their movement:
Method 1: Fishing rod (most reliable)
Cast a fishing rod at the Ghast. The hook attaches and you can reel the Ghast toward the portal. This works but requires patience because Ghasts fly erratically when hooked. Stand behind the portal (on the opposite side from the Ghast) and reel it through.
Method 2: Patience and positioning
Ghasts wander randomly. If your portal is large and in an open area, a Ghast will eventually drift into it on its own. This can take a long time but requires no special setup. Stand far from the portal so the Ghast does not target you and fly away from the portal.
Method 3: Blocking escape routes
Build walls or tunnels leading toward the portal. As the Ghast drifts around, the walls funnel it toward the portal opening. Combine this with a fishing rod for the best results.
On the Overworld side
When the Ghast enters the portal, it teleports to the Overworld. Be ready on the Overworld side:
- Build a containment area around the Overworld portal. Use obsidian or other blast-resistant blocks because the Ghast will start shooting fireballs immediately.
- The containment area should be at least 10x10x10 to give the Ghast room to exist but small enough that it cannot fly away.
- Cover the area with a roof to prevent the Ghast from floating up and out of reach.
Killing the Ghast
Once the Ghast is in the Overworld, kill it by any means:
- Bow and arrow: The standard approach. A Power V bow two-shots a Ghast.
- Reflect its own fireball: Hit the Ghast's fireball back at it by swinging your sword or shooting an arrow at the fireball. This is stylish but not necessary for the advancement.
- Melee: If the Ghast is trapped in a small space, you can reach it with a sword. Ghasts have 10 HP (5 hearts) and die quickly to melee.
Common mistakes
- Portal too small. A 4x5 portal barely fits a Ghast. Build at least 6x6 inside dimensions.
- Killing the Ghast in the Nether. The kill must happen in the Overworld. Do not attack it while luring.
- No containment in the Overworld. If the Ghast escapes the portal area, it will fly away and start destroying terrain with fireballs.
- Ghast despawning. Ghasts can despawn if you move too far away. Name tag the Ghast before luring if possible, although this is very difficult in practice. Stay within 128 blocks at all times.
