How to Get a Totem of Undying

Held in your hand, a totem of undying turns a killing blow into a second chance. You cannot craft one, but every evoker drops one, so a raid is a totem farm. Watch it save the run below.

Where to get one

Every evoker drops exactly one totem. Evokers come from woodland mansions and, much more easily, from raids:

1
Find a raid captain

Pillager patrols and outposts have a captain carrying a banner over its head.

2
Get Bad Omen

Kill the captain and you gain the Bad Omen effect, shown as a banner icon.

3
Enter a village

Walk into any village while Bad Omen is active and a raid begins around you.

4
Clear the waves

Each evoker that spawns in the raid drops exactly one totem. Bigger raids mean more evokers.

Hold it, do not store it

A totem only works while it is in your main hand or off hand. One sitting in your inventory will not save you. The usual setup is a sword or pickaxe in your main hand and a totem in your off hand, so you are always covered.

What it gives you

The moment it triggers, you survive at half a heart and gain:

Regeneration II

Rapidly heals you back up after the save.

Absorption II

Adds extra gold hearts as a buffer.

Fire Resistance

Shields you from fire and lava for a while.

Quick answers

Can you craft a totem of undying?

No. It has no recipe and is not sold by villagers. The only source is killing an evoker, which always drops exactly one.

Where do evokers spawn?

In woodland mansions and in raid waves. Raids are far easier to repeat, so most players farm totems from raids rather than hunting mansions.

How do I farm totems in raids?

Kill a pillager raid captain to get Bad Omen, then step into a village to trigger a raid. Clear the waves and collect a totem from every evoker that appears.

Does a totem work in my inventory?

No. It only saves you while held in your main hand or off hand. A totem sitting in your backpack does nothing, so keep one in your off hand.

What buffs do I get when it triggers?

You survive at half a heart and gain Regeneration II, Absorption II and Fire Resistance, with a golden burst on screen. The totem is used up in the process.

How many can I hold?

One totem saves you once. Carry a stack and the game uses them one at a time, so a deep stack means many lives.

One mob drops it and nothing else does

Evokers are the only source

Every totem in the game came off an evoker, and evokers appear in woodland mansions and in raids. There is no chest, no trade and no crafting recipe, so a totem supply means either finding mansions or triggering raids on purpose.

Raids are the renewable route

A raid spawns evokers in its later waves, and raids can be started deliberately with bad omen from an illager captain. That turns totems from a one off mansion prize into a farmable item, which is the reason most players end up with a stack rather than one.

It has to be in your hand

The totem only saves you if you are holding it, main hand or off hand, at the moment the damage lands. Sitting in your inventory it does nothing, which is the single most common way players die with a totem on them.
