How to Get Elytra
Elytra are the wings that let you fly, and you cannot craft them. They wait in an End Ship out past the End City. Here is the whole route to get a pair, how to fly with them, and how to keep them in the air.
Where to find elytra
Every pair is out in the End, on the ship beside an End City. The route:
Defeat the dragon on the central End island. When it dies, an End Gateway portal appears nearby.
Throw an ender pearl straight through the small gateway portal to teleport out to the outer End islands.
You land in the void islands dotted with chorus plants. Head out in one direction and keep exploring.
Look for tall purpur towers. That cluster is an End City, full of shulkers and loot chests.
Some cities have a floating End Ship beside them. Cross to it carefully; a shulker guards the deck, and a brewing stand and dragon head sit aboard.
The wings hang in an item frame at the bow of the ship. Grab them, and the End City loot is yours too.
New to the End? Stock up on ender pearls and gear in the items database before you go.
How to fly
Once you have the wings, getting airborne takes four moves.
Open your inventory and place the elytra in the chestplate slot. They sit where your body armour would go.
Jump off something tall, or get launched. You need to be falling to start a glide.
Press the jump key while falling to spread the wings. You now glide forward, slowly trading height for distance.
Hold a firework rocket and use it mid-glide to surge forward and climb. Keep firing to stay up. In rain, a Riptide trident also launches you.
Keeping them in the air
Flying wears the elytra down. Repair them on an anvil with a phantom membrane (dropped by phantoms on sleepless nights), or join two elytra together. The cleanest fix is Mending, which repairs them from the XP you collect. If they do run out they still equip; one membrane brings them back.
