How to Get Elytra

Elytra are the wings that let you fly, and you cannot craft them. They wait in an End Ship out past the End City. Here is the whole route to get a pair, how to fly with them, and how to keep them in the air.

Where to find elytra

Every pair is out in the End, on the ship beside an End City. The route:

1
Beat the Ender Dragon

Defeat the dragon on the central End island. When it dies, an End Gateway portal appears nearby.

2
Take an End Gateway

Throw an ender pearl straight through the small gateway portal to teleport out to the outer End islands.

3
Reach the outer islands

You land in the void islands dotted with chorus plants. Head out in one direction and keep exploring.

4
Find an End City

Look for tall purpur towers. That cluster is an End City, full of shulkers and loot chests.

5
Board the End Ship

Some cities have a floating End Ship beside them. Cross to it carefully; a shulker guards the deck, and a brewing stand and dragon head sit aboard.

6
Take the elytra

The wings hang in an item frame at the bow of the ship. Grab them, and the End City loot is yours too.

New to the End? Stock up on ender pearls and gear in the items database before you go.

How to fly

Once you have the wings, getting airborne takes four moves.

1
Equip the wings

Open your inventory and place the elytra in the chestplate slot. They sit where your body armour would go.

2
Get into the air

Jump off something tall, or get launched. You need to be falling to start a glide.

3
Deploy and glide

Press the jump key while falling to spread the wings. You now glide forward, slowly trading height for distance.

4
Boost with rockets

Hold a firework rocket and use it mid-glide to surge forward and climb. Keep firing to stay up. In rain, a Riptide trident also launches you.

Keeping them in the air

Flying wears the elytra down. Repair them on an anvil with a phantom membrane (dropped by phantoms on sleepless nights), or join two elytra together. The cleanest fix is Mending, which repairs them from the XP you collect. If they do run out they still equip; one membrane brings them back.

Quick answers

Can you craft elytra?
No. Elytra cannot be crafted or bought from villagers. The only way to get a pair is to find them in the End Ship near an End City.
How do I get to an End City?
Beat the Ender Dragon, throw an ender pearl through the End Gateway it leaves behind, then explore the outer End islands until you spot the purpur towers of a city.
How do firework rockets work with elytra?
While gliding, using a plain firework rocket thrusts you forward and upward. A rocket with more gunpowder gives a longer push, so a stack of them lets you fly for ages.
How do I repair elytra?
Combine them with a phantom membrane on an anvil, or join two elytra together. Mending is the easiest long-term fix, repairing them with the XP you pick up.
Can I fly forever?
Pure gliding always sinks, so you lose height over time. With firework rockets you keep climbing and can fly as far as your rockets last.
Do elytra break for good?
No. When the durability runs out they stop gliding but stay equipped, and one phantom membrane on an anvil brings them back.
