How to Make Scaffolding
Scaffolding is the builder’s favourite block: stack it up as fast as you can place it, climb it like a ladder, then knock out the bottom block to drop the whole tower and pick it all back up. Made from bamboo and stringit is nearly free.
1 · Stack up fast2 · Climb with jump3 · Break bottom → it all drops
Scaffolding builds a tower as fast as you can place it, you climb it like a ladder, and breaking the bottom block collapses the whole stack at once.
The recipe
Bamboo down the sides, one string up top.
One craft makes six, and bamboo regrows fast.
How to use it
Three things scaffolding does that a normal block cannot.
Stack upPlace one block, look straight up and hold use. Scaffolding keeps stacking on top of itself, so a tower goes up as fast as you can hold the button.
Climb itStand in the column and hold jump to rise, or hold sneak to drop down. You move through it like a ladder, no jumping block to block.
Reach outEach block can float up to about six blocks sideways from a supported column, so you can bridge out over gaps without a single dirt pillar.
Take it all down at once
Scaffolding only stays up while it is connected to the ground or a wall. Break the bottom block of a tower and every block above it loses support and pops off at the same timedropping the whole column for you to collect. That is what makes it perfect for temporary build platforms: up in seconds, gone in one hit.
Quick answers
How do you make scaffolding?
Six bamboo down the left and right columns of the crafting grid with one string in the top middle. That makes six scaffolding at a time, and bamboo farms quickly, so it is one of the cheapest blocks in the game.
How do you go up and down scaffolding?
Stand inside the column. Hold jump to climb up and hold sneak (crouch) to come back down. You glide through it smoothly, like a ladder you can also stand on top of.
How high and how far can scaffolding go?
As high as you want straight up. Sideways, a block floats up to about six blocks out from a column that has support below it; past that the floating end breaks off.
How do you take scaffolding down fast?
Break the bottom block. Every scaffolding above it that is no longer supported pops off at once, so a whole tower drops in a moment and you collect it all back.
Is bamboo the only way to craft it?
Yes, scaffolding needs bamboo and string. Bamboo grows tall and fast and is easy to farm, and a single string comes from spiders or fishing, so a stack of scaffolding is cheap to make.
Do you take fall damage on scaffolding?
Not while you are climbing inside it. You only fall if you sneak off the side or break the column out from under yourself, so it is safe to ride up and down.
The fastest way up and down a build
Bamboo and string, and it stacks itself
Scaffolding is cheap enough to treat as disposable, and placing one block on top of another extends the column sideways as well as upwards. Six blocks of horizontal reach is the limit before an unsupported run breaks, which is the number worth remembering when you bridge across a facade.
Crouching drops you down the inside
You climb by walking into it and descend by holding crouch, both far faster than a ladder and without the fall damage of jumping. For a build taller than a few blocks this is the difference between an afternoon of climbing and getting on with the work.
Breaking the bottom takes the whole column
Remove the base block and the entire stack above it comes down as items, which is the fastest cleanup in the game. It is also the fastest accident, so a scaffolding tower you are standing on should have its base somewhere you are not going to mine.
