Slow Falling has no enhanced (level II) variant.

Splash and Lingering Slow Falling

Add Gunpowder to a finished Slow Falling potion to create a Splash Potion of Slow Falling you can throw. A splash Slow Falling affects every entity within a small radius on impact, and the Slow Falling it applies is at full strength where the bottle lands, dropping away with distance until it is nothing four blocks out. Add Dragon's Breath to a Splash Potion of Slow Falling to create a Lingering Potion of Slow Falling, which leaves an area-of-effect cloud of Slow Falling on the ground. A lingering Slow Falling cloud applies a quarter of the drinkable duration each time it touches you, and it keeps applying that Slow Falling for as long as the cloud sits there.

Best Uses

  • End exploration: The End is full of void gaps between islands. Slow Falling gives you time to react and bridge or ender pearl to safety when knocked off by Shulkers or Endermen.
  • Ender Dragon fight: Prevents lethal fall damage from the dragon's knockback attack. Drink before engaging the dragon on the fountain.
  • Deep cave exploration: Keeps you safe from unexpected drops into ravines or lava caverns.
  • Elytra backup: If your elytra breaks mid-flight, Slow Falling prevents a fatal landing.

Slow Falling in exact numbers

Slow Falling is the odd one out on timing. Where nearly every other beneficial potion starts at three minutes, this one starts at ninety seconds and extends to four minutes rather than eight. It is priced as an emergency item rather than a preparation item, and the brewing chain reflects that too: there is no enhanced version to fall more slowly with.

Slow Falling as an emergency, not a plan

Slow Falling is the odd one on the shelf: 90 seconds at base and four minutes extended, where nearly every other beneficial potion starts at three minutes. Slow Falling is written as a rescue item, and that shows in how people use it, which is in the second after a mistake rather than in the minute before a climb. Slow Falling also cancels the fall damage from an elytra crash and from a wind charge launch, and Slow Falling has no enhanced version, because slower than slow is not a level the game defines. Keep one Slow Falling in the off-hand row on any build above thirty blocks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Slow Falling prevent all fall damage?

Yes. While the effect is active, you take zero fall damage regardless of the height you fall from. You still descend, just very slowly.

Does Slow Falling affect jump height?

No, your jump height is the same. You rise at normal speed but descend slowly, which changes how platforming feels but does not limit your vertical reach.

Can I farm Phantom Membranes reliably?

Yes. Stay awake for three or more in-game nights, then stand outdoors at night. Phantoms spawn in groups of 1-4 above you. Use a Smite sword or bow to kill them. A Looting III sword increases drops. You can also build a simple platform farm to concentrate spawns.

Why does Slow Falling last only ninety seconds?

Because it is priced as an emergency item. Its base is 1800 ticks where nearly every other beneficial potion starts at 3600, and its extended version reaches 4800 rather than the usual 9600. There is no enhanced version, since falling more slowly than slowly is not a level the game defines.

Does a lingering Slow Falling cloud work as a safety net?

It gives 451 ticks per application, a quarter of the drinkable potion, and it keeps re-applying that while the cloud sits there. Dropped at the bottom of a climb it is a genuinely useful net; thrown as a splash at range it is not, because the share falls to nothing four blocks from the impact.
