What Are Splash Potions?

Splash Potions are throwable versions of regular potions. Instead of drinking them, you throw them like projectiles. On impact, they shatter and apply their effect to all entities within a small radius. You create a Splash Potion by adding Gunpowder to any finished potion in a Brewing Stand.

Brewing Steps

  1. Brew any regular potion using the standard Water Bottle to Awkward Potion to effect potion chain.
  2. Optionally modify it with Redstone Dust (extend) or Glowstone Dust (enhance).
  3. Add Gunpowder to convert it into a Splash Potion.

Duration Mechanics

Splash Potions have 75 % of the drinkable potion's duration. The effectiveness also scales with distance from the impact point. A direct hit applies 100 % of the effect, while targets at the edge of the splash radius receive reduced duration proportional to their distance.

Throw Range and Radius

Splash Potions have a throwing arc similar to Snowballs and Eggs. The splash radius on impact is approximately 4 blocks. Entities closer to the centre receive stronger and longer effects.

Best Uses

  • Self-healing in combat: Throw Splash Healing II at your feet for instant HP recovery without the drinking animation delay.
  • Team support: Throw positive splash potions (Regeneration, Speed, Strength) into groups of allies to buff everyone at once.
  • PvP debuffs: Splash Poison, Weakness, Slowness, and Harming are core PvP tools for weakening opponents.
  • Zombie Villager curing: Splash Weakness is required for the curing process, since you cannot feed a potion to a Zombie Villager.

Splash duration, measured properly

A splash potion does not simply give three quarters of the drinkable time. What the game does is measure how far each target is from the point of impact: at the impact itself the effect lands at its full drinkable duration, the share falls away as the distance grows, and at four blocks it reaches zero. The three quarters figure everyone quotes is what you get one block from the splash, so the column below is the one block case, and standing in the middle of your own throw gives you the full number in the third column.

What the splash form is actually for

A splash potion is not a weaker potion, it is a potion you can aim. The splash form gives its full drinkable duration at the point of impact and less as the distance grows, reaching nothing four blocks out, which means a splash aimed at your own feet is worth exactly as much as drinking it. The splash form is the only way to put an effect on someone else, on a horse, on a villager or on a mob, and the splash form is also the only route to a lingering potion and from there to tipped arrows. Gunpowder is the whole cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert a Splash Potion back to a regular potion?

No. The Gunpowder modification is one-way. You cannot undo it once brewed.

Do Splash Potions work on the Ender Dragon?

The Ender Dragon is immune to most status effects. Splash Harming is one of the few that does work, but only when the dragon is perched on the fountain. Positive splash potions have no effect on the dragon.

Can I apply Splash Potions to myself?

Yes. Throwing a Splash Potion straight down or at a wall right next to you applies the effect to yourself. This is faster than drinking because there is no use-item animation.
