How to Make a Wind Charged Potion in Minecraft
Brew the Potion of Wind Charging from a Breeze Rod, and turn whatever drinks it into a wind burst on death. Full recipe, exact duration in ticks, blast radius and best uses.
Ingredients
| Item | Quantity | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Breeze Rod | 1 | Dropped by a Breeze in a trial chamber, on a player kill only |
| Nether Wart | 1 | Nether Fortress stairwells, farmable on Soul Sand |
| Blaze Powder | fuel | Crafted from Blaze Rods |
| Glass Bottle | 1-3 | Crafted from Glass |
Brewing Chain
- Fill Glass Bottles at any water source to get the Water Bottles every Wind Charging brew starts from.
- Add Nether Wart to brew the Awkward Potions that Wind Charging needs as a base.
- Add a Breeze Rod to produce the Potion of Wind Charging.
A Breeze Rod on a plain Water Bottle does not fail: it gives you a Mundane Potion and costs you the rod, which is an expensive mistake given where rods come from. Brew the Awkward Potion first.
What the effect actually does
Wind Charging does nothing at all while it runs. It has no attribute, no damage over time and no change to how you move. Everything happens at the moment the carrier dies: the game triggers a wind burst at chest height with a radius of three blocks, using the same blast calculation a Breeze's wind charge uses. It throws entities and pops light blocks, and it does not set anything on fire or destroy terrain.
That makes it a delayed trap rather than a weapon. Splashed onto a mob you are about to kill, it turns that kill into a shove; drunk yourself, it turns your own death into one. In a trial chamber corridor that is genuinely useful, because a wind burst moves everything nearby off you at once.
Best Uses
- Crowd control: splash a group of mobs, then kill one. Each death adds another three block burst to the pile.
- Trial chambers: the effect comes from a chamber drop and works best in the tight rooms it came from.
- Tipped arrows: at an eighth of the duration it still lasts long enough to survive most fights, since the effect only matters at the end.
Wind Charging in exact numbers
Wind Charging is one of four potions added with the trial chambers, and the only one of them whose payload is an explosion. It carries no attribute and no level, so the two numbers that matter are the timer it runs on and the three block radius of the burst it leaves behind.
| Wind Charging: what was checked | Value in Java 26.2 |

| Splash Wind Charging at the point of impact | 3600 ticks (3:00), no shorter than the bottle |
| Splash Wind Charging one block away | 2701 ticks (2:15.1); further away is less, and four blocks out is zero |
| Lingering Wind Charging cloud | 901 ticks (0:45.1) each time it ticks on you, a quarter of the bottle |
| Tipped arrow of Wind Charging | 451 ticks (0:22.6) per hit, an eighth of the bottle |

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the Wind Charging potion last?
3600 ticks, which is three minutes. There is no Redstone Dust version and no Glowstone Dust version: the brewing chain has exactly one recipe for it, so three minutes is the only duration the drinkable potion has.
Does the wind burst damage me?
It uses the wind charge blast calculation, which throws entities rather than hurting them, and it does not start fires. The danger is entirely in where you land, which in a trial chamber is often a pit.
Can I get Breeze Rods without fighting a Breeze?
No. Rods drop only from a Breeze and only when a player lands the killing blow, one or two at a time, with Looting raising the ceiling to four. That is the real cost of this potion.
Is Wind Charging worth throwing at mobs?
Against a crowd, yes, because every death in the splash adds another burst. Against a single mob you are better off drinking it before a fight you might lose, so your own death clears the room.
Does the effect stack with a Breeze's own wind charges?
They are separate sources, so a burst from the effect and a charge from a Breeze can hit you in the same second. Both throw rather than damage, and both are survivable in the open; neither is survivable over a drop.
