The brewing shelf is not evenly expensive. Nether Wart and Blaze Powder appear in almost every chain and both farm themselves once you have a fortress, while a Ghast Tear and a Turtle Shell are one-off hunts that gate exactly one potion each. Sugar, Spider Eye, Rabbit's Foot and Pufferfish are cheap enough to ignore, and the Fermented Spider Eye is the one ingredient that repays learning properly, because it appears in eleven separate conversions and turns four different potions into something else.
