Bullseye: How to Hit the Center of a Target Block from 30+ Meters
Guide to the Bullseye advancement. Target block mechanics, distance setup, aiming tips and how to consistently hit the center from 30 meters.
Bullseye requires you to hit the center of a Target block with a projectile from at least 30 meters (blocks) away. The Target block emits a redstone signal proportional to how close to the center you hit it. To earn this advancement, you must hit the exact center and produce a signal strength of 15. This guide covers setup, aiming and the specific mechanics involved.
Understanding Target blocks
Target blocks are crafted with 4 Redstone Dust + 1 Hay Bale. When hit by a projectile (arrow, trident, snowball, egg, etc.), the block emits a redstone signal. The signal strength depends on accuracy:
- Center hit: signal strength 15 (advancement triggers)
- Near-center: signal strength 8-14
- Edge hit: signal strength 1-7
The center is the exact middle of the block face, a very small target area.
Setting up the shot
- Place the Target block on a flat surface at eye level. Put it on top of a 1-block pillar so the center aligns with your standing eye height. This eliminates vertical aiming complexity.
- Mark 30+ blocks distance. Walk 33-35 blocks away (adding buffer). Count blocks or use F3 coordinates. Place a marker block at your firing position.
- Clear the path. Remove all blocks, tall grass, flowers and other obstacles between your position and the Target block.
- Place a redstone lamp behind the Target. Connect redstone dust from the Target block to a redstone lamp. When you hit the center (strength 15), the lamp will light up, confirming the advancement-qualifying hit.
Best projectile to use
Arrows from a fully drawn bow are the best choice. They travel in a predictable arc and do not despawn on contact like snowballs. However, any projectile works:
- Arrow (bow): Reliable, predictable arc. Best for consistent aiming.
- Trident: Straighter trajectory but harder to recover without Loyalty.
- Snowball/egg: Shorter range and more drop. Not recommended for 30 blocks.
Aiming technique
At 30 blocks with a fully drawn bow, the arrow drops approximately 5-8 blocks from a flat trajectory. Here is how to aim:
- Stand at the same elevation as the Target block center.
- Aim your crosshair about 5-7 blocks above the Target block.
- Fully draw the bow (hold until the bow stops pulling back).
- Release and observe where the arrow hits.
- Adjust up or down based on the result and try again.
Improving accuracy
- Shoot from an elevated position. If you stand 5-10 blocks higher than the Target, you can aim more directly at it with less vertical compensation. This makes center hits much easier.
- Use a trident from elevation. Tridents have less arc than arrows. From a 10-block high platform at 30 blocks distance, a trident thrown at the Target's center lands very close to where you aim.
- Bring lots of arrows. This is a trial-and-error advancement. Bring at least a stack of arrows and expect 10-20 attempts before hitting the exact center.
- Listen for the redstone signal. A strength-15 signal makes a distinct click. If you hear the strong redstone activation, check for the advancement notification.
Common mistakes
- Not hitting the center. A near-center hit gives a high redstone signal but does not earn the advancement. Only a perfect center hit at strength 15 counts.
- Standing too close. If you are at 28 blocks instead of 30, the advancement will not trigger even with a perfect center hit. Always measure distance carefully.
- Using a partially drawn bow. Partial draws have more arc and less consistency. Always fully draw.
- Wind and lag. On multiplayer servers with lag, arrow positions can be slightly off from what you see. Try on a low-latency connection or singleplayer.
