How to Fight in the Nether
In the Nether you don't fight the mob, you fight the lava. Drink Fire Resistance, hold your ground two blocks off the ledge, and never draw a bow at a ghast near a drop.
Win the positioning, not the duel
- 1Drink Fire Res firstA Fire Resistance potion lasts 3:00 (8:00 extended) and zeroes fire and lava damage. Drink it before you cross any lava sea so a knockback into the lake costs you nothing.
- 2Fight away from the ledgeThe real killer in the Nether is the drop, not the mob. Stand at least two blocks back from any lava edge so a hoglin charge or ghast fireball can't bump you off.
- 3Block ghast fireballs, don't bow themPunch or hit the fireball back to one-shot the ghast, or just block its line of sight with cobble. Drawing a bow near a ledge roots you in place while the blast knocks you into the lava.
- 4Trap hoglins and piglin brutesHoglins do up to 9 damage and flee crimson fungus; brutes ignore your gold armor. Pillar up two blocks or wall them off with cobble, then hit down from safety.
- 5Carry an outKeep a golden apple for the 4 absorption hearts and a water-free escape plan. If you panic, place cobble under your feet to pillar up out of melee instead of running toward the edge.
What you need
Fire Resistance
Diamond/netherite sword
Golden apples
Stack of cobblestone
The Nether crowd, side by side
The Nether does not have the toughest mobs in the game, it has the ones with the longest reach. A blaze notices you from 48 blocks, further than anything else on this site, and a piglin on Bedrock from 64. Health is rarely the problem down there; being seen first is.
| Mob | Health | Hit damage | Movement speed | Follow range | XP |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blaze | 20 | 6 | 0.23 | 48 | 10 |
| Hoglin | 40 | 6 | 0.3 | 16 | 5 |

Quick answers
?
How do you survive combat in the Nether?
Drink a Fire Resistance potion before you cross lava, fight at least two blocks back from any ledge, and keep cobblestone to wall off mobs or pillar up. Most Nether deaths are falls into lava from knockback, not the mob's damage, so positioning matters more than your weapon.
?
Why is fighting near lava so dangerous in Minecraft?
Mobs like ghasts and hoglins deal heavy knockback. One bump while you're near a lava edge sends you into the lake, and without Fire Resistance that is almost always fatal. Fire Resistance makes lava harmless for the potion's duration, which is why you drink it before every crossing.
?
How do you kill a ghast?
Hit its fireball back at it with your hand, sword, or an arrow to one-shot the ghast, or break line of sight with a wall of cobble. Avoid drawing a bow while standing on a ledge, because the draw roots you and the fireball blast can knock you off.
?
How long does Fire Resistance last in the Nether?
A standard Fire Resistance potion lasts 3:00 and the extended (redstone) version lasts 8:00. While it's active you take no fire or lava damage at all, so brew a few and re-drink before the timer runs out on a long trip.
?
How do you fight hoglins and piglin brutes?
Hoglins hit for up to 9 damage and run from crimson fungus or warped fungus on a stick; piglin brutes deal heavy damage and ignore the gold armor that pacifies normal piglins. Wall them off with cobble or pillar up two blocks and strike down so they can't reach you.
?
What gear do you need to fight in the Nether?
A diamond or netherite sword, a few Fire Resistance potions, golden apples for emergency absorption hearts, and a stack of cobblestone for walls and pillars. Gold armor on at least one piece keeps regular piglins neutral, though it does nothing against brutes.
?
Which Nether mob sees me first?
The blaze, at 48 blocks of follow range, which is three times the ordinary 16. By the time a fortress corridor is in view, anything in it has usually already noticed you.
?
What is the most dangerous thing in the Nether?
Not a mob at all: it is the terrain, and after that the hoglin's knockback into it. Fire resistance and a block to stand on solve more Nether deaths than any weapon does.
