Splash and Lingering Turtle Master

Add Gunpowder to a finished Turtle Master potion to create a Splash Potion of Turtle Master you can throw. A splash Turtle Master affects every entity within a small radius on impact, and the Turtle Master it applies is at full strength where the bottle lands, dropping away with distance until it is nothing four blocks out. Add Dragon's Breath to a Splash Potion of Turtle Master to create a Lingering Potion of Turtle Master, which leaves an area-of-effect cloud of Turtle Master on the ground. A lingering Turtle Master cloud applies a quarter of the drinkable duration each time it touches you, and it keeps applying that Turtle Master for as long as the cloud sits there.

Best Uses

  • Tanking damage: Turtle Master II provides 80 % damage reduction, making you almost invulnerable for 20 seconds. Combined with a full netherite set and Protection IV, you can survive burst damage that would otherwise be lethal.
  • Wither fight: Drink Turtle Master II when the Wither reaches half health and enters its charge phase. The Slowness barely matters since the Wither is in melee range anyway.
  • Emergency defence: Keep a Turtle Master potion as a panic button. When you are about to die, the massive damage reduction can buy enough time to heal or escape.

Turtle Master in exact numbers

Turtle Master is the only brewable potion that applies two effects at once, and the levels are higher than anything else in the tree: Slowness at amplifier three and Resistance at amplifier two on the base version, rising to amplifier five and three when enhanced. Twenty seconds is deliberately short, because both halves are extreme and the drawback is as large as the benefit.

Turtle Master, a trade rather than a buff

Turtle Master is the only brewable potion that hands you two effects at once, and one of them is a punishment. Turtle Master gives Resistance at amplifier two and Slowness at amplifier three for 20 seconds, so Turtle Master turns you into something that barely moves and barely takes damage. The enhanced Turtle Master pushes both to amplifier five and three, which is close to immobile. Drink Turtle Master to survive a creeper you cannot dodge or a fall you cannot stop, and never drink Turtle Master in a fight you might want to leave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Slowness worth the Resistance?

In most combat situations, yes. The 60-80 % damage reduction far outweighs the movement penalty when you are already in melee range. For kiting situations, the Slowness makes it impractical.

How do I get Turtle Scutes?

Breed two Turtles on a beach with Seagrass. The eggs hatch after several days, and each baby turtle drops one Scute when it grows into an adult. You need five Scutes to craft one Turtle Shell.

Can I use Speed potions to offset the Slowness?

Partially. Speed and Slowness effects stack additively. Speed II partially offsets Slowness IV but does not fully cancel it. You will still be noticeably slower than normal walking speed.

What exactly does Turtle Master apply?

Two effects at once, which no other brewable potion does: Slowness at amplifier three and Resistance at amplifier two, both for 400 ticks. The extended version keeps the same levels for 800 ticks, and the enhanced version pushes them to amplifier five and amplifier three while staying at 400.

Is twenty seconds not very short?

It is the shortest base duration of any potion in the game, and deliberately so. Resistance at that level removes most incoming damage while Slowness at amplifier three removes most of your movement, so both halves are extreme. A longer version would be an ability rather than a trade.
