How to Not Lose Your Items

Death isn't the disaster. The 5-minute despawn timer is. The moment you drop, a clock starts on your entire inventory at the death coordinates. Win that race with a Recovery Compass, a lit path, and an Ender Chest backup, and a wipe stops costing you your gear.

YOUR STUFF
The 5-Minute Recovery Loop

Treat every death as a timed sprint, not a panic. The pile holds for 5:00 at fixed coordinates, so the only variables are distance and hazards. Light a cobblestone path from spawn toward where you operate so the route back is mob-free and fast, and keep a Recovery Compass on a hotbar slot you never drop.

Before you ever die again, stage an Ender Chest kit: a spare totem, a stack of food, golden apples, and a backup armor set. Because Ender Chest contents survive death and follow you to any other Ender Chest, a total wipe leaves you a ready recovery loadout instead of a naked respawn. Collect the death pile only after clearing hostiles, since a creeper or a shove into lava ends the run before the timer does.

Quick answers

+How long until my items despawn?
Exactly 5 minutes (6,000 game ticks) from the moment they drop. XP orbs vanish faster and can't be fully recovered, but tools, armor, and blocks all share the same 5:00 window.
+Does a Recovery Compass work after I pick items up?
It points to your most recent death location until you die again. It does not need the items to still be there, so it works even if you respawned far away across dimensions (it points to the X/Z, not the dimension).
+What makes items disappear before 5 minutes?
Lava destroys them instantly, cacti and fire burn them, water and explosions push them into hazards, and a despawning entity merge can hide them. The timer is the cap, not a guarantee.
+Can mobs steal or destroy my loot?
Mobs don't pick up dropped tools, but a creeper explosion or a mob shoving items into lava will. Light the area and clear hostiles before you collect so nothing knocks the pile into a hazard.
+Why use an Ender Chest as a backup?
Its contents are shared across every Ender Chest you own and persist through death. Stash a totem, golden apples, food, and a spare armor set so even a total wipe leaves you a recovery kit.
+Should I turn on keepInventory instead?
If you want zero risk, /gamerule keepInventory true keeps everything on death. But the recovery loop (compass + lit path + Ender Chest) keeps the challenge while making losses rare.
