How to Win a PvP Fight in Minecraft
PvP is won on timing, not on luck. Land crits, control spacing with strafing and W-taps, and break the turtle with an axe. Here is the exact loadout and cadence that decides a 1v1.
The duel loop
- 1Gear up before the bellFull enchanted diamond or netherite, a Sharpness diamond sword, a backup axe, a stack of golden apples and a totem in the offhand if it is enabled. Unenchanted armor loses every even fight.
- 2Open with the critJump, then hit on the way DOWN. A falling attack deals 1.5x damage. A Sharpness V diamond sword crits for roughly 11-13 hearts of raw output before armor, far above the 7 of a flat swing.
- 3Strafe, never run straightCircle-strafe to their left while attacking. Tap W toward them at the moment of each hit (W-tap) to reset your knockback sprint and shove them while you stay planted.
- 4Break the shield with an axeIf they turtle behind a shield, swap to an axe and hit them. An axe disables the shield for 5 seconds, then immediately swap back to the sword and combo the opening.
- 5Combo to the killOnce they are in knockback you control the spacing. Keep the crit cadence (jump-hit, land, W-tap, repeat), eat a gapple between trades if you drop below 6 hearts, and close it out.
What you need
Sharpness sword
Golden apples
Totem (offhand)
Full enchanted armor
What a duel is decided by, in two columns
Damage per hit decides who wins an exchange; damage per second decides who wins a fight. The netherite axe leads the first at 10 and the netherite sword leads the second at 12.8. Which column matters depends entirely on whether your opponent will stand still for a second swing.
| Weapon | Damage per hit | Full swings per second | Damage per second | Hits to drop a 20 health player |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netherite Sword | 8 | 1.6 | 12.8 | 3 |
| Diamond Sword | 7 | 1.6 | 11.2 | 3 |
| Netherite Axe | 10 | 1 | 10 | 2 |
| Iron Sword | 6 | 1.6 | 9.6 | 4 |
| Diamond Axe | 9 | 1 | 9 | 3 |
| Iron Axe | 9 | 0.9 | 8.1 | 3 |
| Copper Sword | 5 | 1.6 | 8 | 4 |
| Stone Sword | 5 | 1.6 | 8 | 4 |
| Copper Axe | 9 | 0.8 | 7.2 | 3 |
| Stone Axe | 9 | 0.8 | 7.2 | 3 |
| Golden Axe | 7 | 1 | 7 | 3 |
| Wooden Sword | 4 | 1.6 | 6.4 | 5 |
| Golden Sword | 4 | 1.6 | 6.4 | 5 |
| Wooden Axe | 7 | 0.8 | 5.6 | 3 |
Quick answers
?
How do I crit every hit?
You cannot true-crit while sprinting on the ground. Jump and connect on the downward arc, do not be touching the ground, and have no Slowness or Levitation. That is the 1.5x bonus.
?
Sword or axe for PvP?
Sword for sustained damage and faster recovery; axe for the burst and the shield disable. Carry both: open and combo with the sword, swap to the axe the instant they raise a shield.
?
Why do I lose to shield campers?
You are trading into a blocked hit, which negates most damage and knockback. Axe their shield to lock it for 5 seconds, or bait the block then strafe behind them and hit the back.
?
What is W-tapping?
Briefly releasing and re-pressing forward right as you attack. It resets your sprint so each hit lands with full sprint-knockback, shoving the enemy back while you keep your footing.
?
When should I eat a golden apple?
Pop a normal gapple when you drop under about 6 hearts; it gives Absorption (4 extra hearts) plus Regeneration. Save the enchanted one for when you are losing a long fight.
?
How many hearts does a crit do?
A Sharpness V netherite sword crit lands around 13 raw damage; against full enchanted armor the reduced figure is roughly 5-6 hearts, enough to win most trades inside a 3-hit combo.
?
Which weapon wins a duel?
The sword in most fights, at 12.8 damage a second against the axe's 10, because a duel is a series of exchanges rather than a single hit. The axe wins the fights where you land the first hit and disengage.
?
How many hits to kill a player in full armour?
Far more than the three the table shows, because twenty armour points cut incoming damage substantially. The table's counts are the unarmoured case, and the gap between the two is the whole reason gear decides PvP.
