Pick the Best Combat Potions
A brewing stand is the difference between trading hits and winning the fight. The right stack adds +6 melee damage8 hearts of instant healand full fire immunity. Here is exactly what to brew, what to drink, and what to throw.
The win-condition stack
- 1Build the brewing corePlace a Brewing Stand, fuel it with Blaze Powder (1 powder = 20 brews), and prep Water Bottles. Always keep Nether Wart stacked, it converts every Water Bottle into an Awkward Potion, the base for every combat brew.
- 2Brew the offense stackAwkward + Blaze Powder = Strength (3:00). Add Glowstone Dust for Strength II (1:30, +6 melee dmg). For burst, brew Instant Health (Glistering Melon) and upgrade to Instant Health II for 8 hearts of free healing mid-trade.
- 3Brew the defense stackAwkward + Magma Cream = Fire Resistance (3:00), mandatory vs Blaze, lava, and the Wither's start. Awkward + Ghast Tear = Regeneration, then Glowstone for Regen II (22s, fast HP) to out-sustain melee.
- 4Split into drink vs splashAdd Gunpowder to any potion to make it a Splash. Keep Strength/Fire Res as DRINK (full duration on you). Make Instant Health, Speed, and Regen SPLASH so you can heal teammates or hit a fleeing target at range.
- 5Time the stack in-fightPre-fight: drink Strength II + Fire Res. Mid-fight: splash Instant Health II below 6 hearts, then splash Speed II to chase or kite. Never drink Instant Health when poisoned, Poison + Instant Health math can kill you.

Quick answers
?
What is the single best combat potion?
Strength II. It adds about 6 extra melee damage per hit (+3 per level), turning a Diamond Sword's 7 damage into 13. Drink it (don't splash) so you get the full 1:30 with Glowstone or 3:00 extended with Redstone.
?
Should I drink or splash healing potions?
Splash Instant Health II in a real fight. Drinking takes ~1.5s and locks your movement; a splash is instant, heals 8 hearts, and can be lobbed at a low teammate or even thrown at your own feet while sprinting.
?
Strength vs Instant Damage for PvP?
Strength every time. Instant Damage is easy to counter (Instant Health undoes it) and useless against undead-immunity quirks. Strength II makes every swing hit harder for the whole fight instead of one burst.
?
How do I extend a potion's duration?
Add Redstone Dust. It doubles or extends duration (Strength 3:00 to 8:00) but caps the level at I. Glowstone Dust does the opposite: stronger effect (level II) but shorter time. You can't use both on one potion.
?
Do I need Fire Resistance for boss fights?
Yes for Blaze, the Nether, and the opening of the Wither fight where it spams fire. Fire Res (3:00, or 8:00 with Redstone) makes you immune to fire and lava damage, freeing you to fight inside the chaos.

What potions counter an enemy?
Splash Poison and Splash Weakness (Weakness + a Golden Apple is also how you cure zombie villagers). Slowness and Harming splash potions zone enemies, but skilled players bring Milk Buckets to clear all your debuffs instantly.
