What is a biome?

A biome is a region of the world with its own climate, terrain, blocks, mobs and colours. Biomes decide nearly everything about an area: whether it rains or snows, which mobs spawn, what trees and plants generate, and which structures you can find. They exist across all three dimensions, the Overworld, the Nether and the End.

Temperature, rarity and what biomes decide

  • Climate: temperature sets rain vs snow and grass/water colour.
  • Mobs: each biome has its own spawn list (axolotls in lush caves, striders in the Nether).
  • Blocks: unique blocks like mud, cherry leaves or sculk only generate in specific biomes.
  • Rarity: some biomes (mushroom fields, cherry grove, deep dark) are rare and worth seeking out.

Finding a specific biome

Use the /locate biome command to point to the nearest one, or explore with the biome's signs in mind (colour, trees, terrain). Seeds are the fastest way to start next to a target biome, which the seeds hub covers.

Frequently asked questions

How many biomes are there in Minecraft?
There are roughly 60-65 biomes across the Overworld, Nether and End in 1.21, including variants. The list above covers the major ones with their spawns and unique blocks.
What is the rarest biome in Minecraft?
Mushroom fields are among the rarest, along with the deep dark, cherry grove and modified variants. The list is filterable and shows each biome's rarity.
How do I find a biome fast?
Run /locate biome minecraft:<name> with cheats on to get the coordinates of the nearest one, or start on a seed chosen for that biome.
