A shield turns a near-fatal volley of arrows into zero damage, but only if you raise it in time and keep the attacker in your front cone. Master the 0.25s raise delayrespect the axe-disable cooldownand learn to block-then-counter instead of turtling.

The block-counter rhythm
1
Craft and equip
6 planks + 1 iron ingot = shield. Put it in your off-hand slot (default F to swap). It does not need to be held in your main hand to work.
2
Raise it and face the threat
Hold right-click (use). The shield covers a ~120° cone in front of you. It only blocks damage coming from the direction you are looking, so keep the attacker centered on your crosshair.
3
Mind the 0.25s delay
After you press use, the shield is not active for the first 5 ticks (0.25s). Raise it early, before the arrow lands or the mob's swing connects, not as it hits.
4
Survive the axe disable
An axe hit against a raised shield disables it for 5 seconds (longer with no cooldown management). When you hear the clang, stop blocking, create distance, and wait the cooldown out before re-raising.
5
Drop block to counter
Blocking sets your movement to sneak speed and you cannot attack. Lower the shield, land a sword crit or two, then re-raise. Block-then-strike beats holding block forever.

Quick answers

How much damage does a shield block?
A raised shield blocks 100% of the incoming damage from the front, including arrows, melee, explosions, and most projectiles, as long as the source is within your ~120° front cone.
Why did my shield not block the hit?
Two common reasons: the attack came from outside your front cone (you were not facing it), or you raised the shield within the 0.25s activation delay and it was not active yet.
How do I disable an enemy's shield?
Hit them with any axe while their shield is up. This triggers a 5-second shield-disable. In PvP, axe-then-sword combos are the standard way to break a turtling opponent.
Can I block while attacking?
No. Raising a shield slows you to sneak speed and prevents attacking. You must lower it to swing. Effective play is rhythmic: block the hit, drop, counter, re-raise.
Does a shield block fall damage or magic?
No. Shields do not stop fall damage, drowning, fire/lava, or potion effects. They only block directional physical and projectile damage from the front.
Should the shield be in main hand or off hand?
Off hand. Keeping it off-hand lets you hold a sword and shield at once, raising the shield with use while your sword stays ready for the counter swing.
