How to Use a Totem of Undying

The Totem of Undying is the single best panic button in Minecraft. Held in your offhand, it consumes itself to pull you back from a lethal hit at half a heart and dumps a wave of survival buffs on you.

The trick is not the totem itself, it is staying re-armed. Here is the exact loadout and muscle-memory swap that turns one pop into a full recovery instead of a one-second delay on your death screen.

The pop-and-recover loop

Every survivable burst is the same three beats: lethal hit → totem pop → recover. The pop is automatic, so your only job is the third beat. The moment the gold flash appears you are at 1 HP with Absorption II, Regen II, and Fire Res ticking.

Immediately do two things: bite a Golden Apple to stack a second Regen II, and F-swap a fresh totem back into the offhand. That window is roughly one second of invuln-feeling buffs. Use it to disengage, pearl, or pillar up. Do not trade hits at 1 HP without a re-armed totem.

Against the Warden (a single sonic boom can deal 10 hearts through full netherite) or raid Evokers, carry at least four totems. They feed one at a time, so the re-swap is mandatory after every save.

What the totem is for, in numbers

A totem is worth exactly as much as the hit it saves you from, so the damage column is the one to read. It brings you back on two health, which means a ravager bite at 12 or a wither shot at 8 will simply kill you again unless you have moved. The evoker that drops it is on the list too.

Quick answers

+

Does the totem work in my main hand?

Yes, it triggers from either the main hand or offhand. But you want your weapon in the main hand, so keep the totem in the offhand and swap it there with F.
+

How much HP do I get back when it pops?

You snap to 1 HP (half a heart) plus Absorption II (four golden hearts) and Regeneration II for 8 seconds, which heals you back up if you survive the next few hits.
+

Can a totem save me from the void or /kill?

No. Falling into the void and the /kill command bypass the totem entirely. It also will not save you from a single hit larger than your max HP plus absorption in some edge cases, but normal damage is covered.
+

Where do I farm Totems of Undying?

Evokers always drop exactly one totem. Spawn them in Woodland Mansions or trigger village raids (the final waves spawn Evokers) for a renewable supply.
+

Does the totem protect against fire and lava?

The pop itself gives 40 seconds of Fire Resistance, so right after a save you can stand in lava or fire safely. But it will not stop the lethal hit if you are already burning when it pops.
+

Why did I still die with a totem in my inventory?

It must be in your main hand or offhand at the moment of the lethal hit. A totem sitting in a backpack hotbar slot or chest does nothing. Always pre-swap it to the offhand before a fight.
+

How much health do I have after a totem?

Two, which is one heart, plus a short burst of absorption and regeneration. Almost every hostile mob in the game hits for more than that, so the totem buys you the second to escape rather than the fight.
+

Where do totems come from?

Evokers, one per kill, with no chance roll involved. That makes woodland mansions the only reliable source outside a raid, and it makes the evoker the most valuable 24 health in the game.
