How to Use a Totem of Undying
The Totem of Undying is the single best panic button in Minecraft. Held in your offhand, it consumes itself to pull you back from a lethal hit at half a heart and dumps a wave of survival buffs on you.
The trick is not the totem itself, it is staying re-armed. Here is the exact loadout and muscle-memory swap that turns one pop into a full recovery instead of a one-second delay on your death screen.
Every survivable burst is the same three beats: lethal hit → totem pop → recover. The pop is automatic, so your only job is the third beat. The moment the gold flash appears you are at 1 HP with Absorption II, Regen II, and Fire Res ticking.
Immediately do two things: bite a Golden Apple to stack a second Regen II, and F-swap a fresh totem back into the offhand. That window is roughly one second of invuln-feeling buffs. Use it to disengage, pearl, or pillar up. Do not trade hits at 1 HP without a re-armed totem.
Against the Warden (a single sonic boom can deal 10 hearts through full netherite) or raid Evokers, carry at least four totems. They feed one at a time, so the re-swap is mandatory after every save.
What the totem is for, in numbers
A totem is worth exactly as much as the hit it saves you from, so the damage column is the one to read. It brings you back on two health, which means a ravager bite at 12 or a wither shot at 8 will simply kill you again unless you have moved. The evoker that drops it is on the list too.
